The Best New Game Improvement Irons - 2016

By: Golf Shake | Tue 23 Feb 2016

It can often be hard to keep up with who has released what on the golfing market and to help you make the most informed choice this year we have created our 'Best Game Improvement Irons - 2016' guide.

For those looking to improve their iron play but need that little bit more help to gain a long and high ball flight, here are some of the best game improvement irons on the market this year including TaylorMade M2, Callaway XR OS, Titliest AP2, Mizuno JPX EZ Forged, Nike Vapor Fly, Wilson C200, PING G and COBRA F6.

TaylorMade M2

TaylorMade M2 Iron

TaylorMade have described their new M2 iron as a “distance machine” and features industry leading distance technology that not only allows for more distance but a higher ball distance as well.

The 360° undercut combined with a thick-thin fluted hosel offers ultra low CG that allows for stronger lofts and therefore greater distances while still maintaining high peak trajectory. The Speed Pocket running across the bottom of the iron flexes upon impact and when combined with the Thin Face Inverted Cone technology, you get increased ball speeds across the face for more distance.  Finally, the V-Shaped Support Beams manages sound and eliminates unwanted vibrations for even greater feel.

Titleist 716 AP1

Titleist AP1

The Titleist AP1’s are well renowned as being some of the most forgiving irons on the market and the new 716 AP’s certainly fit the bill. The Titleist 716 AP1 irons are perfect for those golfers who desire a tour-proven design with distance, forgiveness and feel.

The 716 AP1 irons use extreme high density tungsten weighting to position the centre of the gravity lower and perfectly aligned at impact for greater speeds and consistency at impact. The innovative co-forged construction has a lower centre of gravity and high-density tungsten low and around the perimeter of the face in order to increase the moment of inertia to get you more distance on those off centre hits. Through set optimised CG progression, you get a precise tour-proven trajectory.

Callaway XR OS

Callaway XR OS

The Callaway XR OS irons compliment the XR OS hybrid as they feature a lot of similar technology in order to help you get the ball in the air quicker and to offer greater distance.

The XR OS iron comes with the industry leading Cup 360 technology that helps increase speed across the clubface in this oversized head. A new heat treatment in the face cup has again increased speeds and the soft heat treatment on the body offers softer feel. Like all new irons nowadays, the centre of gravity has been moved lower and deeper in order to create a ball flight that creates more distance. The soles have been made wider to offer a larger sweet spot and more forgiveness as well as progressive loft and lies to make sure you get the most, distance wise, out of every iron.

Cobra KING F6 Irons

COBRA F6 Irons
COBRA F6 Irons
COBRA F6 Irons

Distance with forgiveness, feel and control is exactly what is delivered in the Cobra KING F6 irons through its classic shaped head to inspire more confidence. Through advanced construction techniques, Cobra have created what they describe as the KING of progressive iron sets.

There is so much new technology on show in these irons such as TecFlo Construction. Each club set is designed to perform differently through this progressive construction. The 3-5 iron has a full-hollow design with face inserts to deliver a lower CG and a highly responsive face. The 6 and 7 irons have half-hollow design with an extremely thin face. When you add the additional discretionary weight you get optimal CG positioning. Finally, the scoring irons, 8-PW, have a traditional cavity back design with low and further back CG, which results in more spin and added shot control.

The Speed Channel Sole is an engineered channel positioned close to the leading edge and around the perimeter of the upper back cavity to create more flex at impact for that little bit of extra distance. The Premium Chrome Plating offers a more durable, confidence inspiring aesthetic look at address. The T.O.P Technology is propriety of Cobra technology that frees up 5g of discretionary weight, which has been moved low, and further back to create a lower CG and in turn a better ball launch and flight. Finally, the Progressive Spin Tech and Deep Perimeter Undercutting creates the largest unsupported face ever in Cobra irons history.

Mizuno JPX EZ Forged

Mizuno JPX EZ Forged

Injected with Boron, the Mizuno JPX EZ forged irons offer the best in distance and forgiveness. The high strength boron infused steel allows the use of a wider CNC pocket cavity between the 3 and 7 iron that increases the ball speed and offers more distance if you don’t quite catch it out of the middle.

But the boron infused steel is not the only cool new technology featured in this forgiving cavity back iron. The iron has a Power Frame, which pushes weight into the four extreme corners of the cavity for improved stability through impact. The combination of the CNC pocket cavity, multi-thickness face and power frame has lead Mizuno to create a cavity back that extremely forgiving and easy to hit on a consistent basis. When you add its softly bevelled edge to glide through the turf and smart anti-glare plating, you get one of the best looking and feeling irons on the market.

PING G Irons

PING G Irons

As well as featuring PING’s revolutionary COR-Eye™ Technology, the new PING G irons also feature loads of brand new technology. The brand new G irons have thinner faces that aid more flexing, which ultimately results in additional carry as well as a higher max height to get the ball to stop on the green easier. The iron also has a newly designed cavity structure that houses the concealed Custom Tuning Port that connects to the sole of the club, enabling each iron’s centre of gravity to be moved lower and further back for extreme forgiveness with every shot.

As well as improving the technology in the head of the club, PING have made advances in the shaft of the iron too. The Ascending Weight Technology (AWT) 2.0 shaft provides improved distance and accuracy with long irons as well as more control with short irons and wedges.

Srixon Z355

Srixon Z355

Part of the Srixon Z series, the Srixon Z355 irons combine more distance, maximum forgiveness and incredible feel in a mid-high launching cavity backprofile. There’s a whole host of new features such as the thin, high-strength HT1170 steel face that increases COR for higher ball speeds from four iron to seven iron. The high MOI design offers extra forgiveness and a more stable ball flight and the tour V.T enhances turf interaction.

The most notable piece of technology in the Z355 iron is without a doubt the innovative Action Mass Technology. In order to create a more consistent swing, Srixon have concentrated more weight in the club head and raised the balance point on the shaft. Through years of testing, Srixon have established that this is the best way to create more club head speed, therefore gaining more distance.

Wilson Staff C200

Wilson C200

The Wilson Staff C200 iron has been developed and designed for the Crossover player searching for a midsize head shape and moderate offset. The C200 pushes innovation to the absolute limit and yields distances not available from traditional irons.

The core design at the heart of this iron is the propriety FLX Face Technology, which minimizes the contact points between the body and the thin face. These contact points when combined with a series of Power Holes situated around the perimeter of the face offer greater flexibility upon contact and therefore higher ball speeds. The Power Holes are filled with TE031 urethane to offer the best in sound as well as dampening vibrations for great feel.

Nike Vapor Fly

The new Nike Vapor Fly irons contain three unique RZN-enhanced constructions in order to create more distance with an exceptional feel. The game-improvement constructions push weight lower and towards to perimeter for consistent, high and long approach shots.

The club features Modern Muscle technology that balances the centre of gravity in the centre of the face optimise stability. Lightweight RZN allows for more weight to be located lower and deeper for a higher ball flight and when combined with the flexible Nexcor face and Flybeam-reiforced face you get increased ball speeds with more forgiveness on those mishits.
