Phil Mickelson gave a Mack Daddy 2 ‘wedgeducation’ on the first play-off hole of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, hitting his approach to inside six inches for a tap-in birdie to claim victory over fellow Staff Professional, South African Branden Grace, who also put the company’s new FT Optiforce 440cc Driver straight into play.
Both players had tied at 17-under par in regulation play, but it was Mickelson who came out on top in the play-off, thanks to a stunning wedge shot into the 18th green at the Castle Stuart Golf Links, near Inverness. The victory not only marked Phil’s first individual victory on British soil but also his first in Europe.
To set up the a play-off four-time major winner Mickelson shot rounds of 66, 70, 66 and 69, whereas Grace, a four-time winner on the European Tour, carded 71, 65, 66 and 69. Mickelson’s play-off victory earned him €579,080 with Branden picking up €386,049.
