Is Bryson DeChambeau The Most Popular Name in Golf?
Guest article by student sports journalist Fin Tait.
"Can he win the Masters? Absolutely he can!"
When you think about tour golf, your mind will most often jump to collared shirts, smart trousers, bombing drives and the final putts on the 18th to secure a big win.
However, the different characters and personalities you can find in the professional game may not be the first thing that comes to mind. Bryson DeChambeau may just be one of the individuals breaking this mould.
His spark of personality, long drives and care for his fans and followers has really been demonstrated in the past year and it’s started to pay off for him.
DeChambeau's Growing Popularity
The American, currently playing on the LIV Tour and two-time US Open Champion, has really proven his popularity amongst fans worldwide in recent times.
Legendary caddie Billy Foster agreed, speaking to Genting Casino, he said: "If you look at Bryson before leaving for LIV to what he is now, I mean, he has gone from the outhouse to the penthouse!
"He's gone from being probably not the most popular player to, arguably, the most popular player in the world. He's been a YouTube sensation, and he gives the spectators and the fans so much time at these events.
"He stays behind for hours signing stuff, for kids and people and he's given a lot to the game, and it's been great to see to be quite honest."
When DeChambeau found himself in a tight battle for the PGA Championship title with Xander Schauffele, he took a quick moment to toss a ball to a young fan.
However, when an adult fan intercepted the ball from reaching the young supporter, DeChambeau made sure justice was served.
He stopped immediately and called the ball thief back to the scene of the crime, making sure the ball was given the young fan - overall a great gesture, especially considering he was going toe to toe with Schauffele for a major title.
The Impact of YouTube
As Foster mentioned, much of this popularity has also been generated from his very own YouTube channel, where he uploads regularly.
He began his channel in May 2021, with his first video being a documentation of a week in his life on tour. His channel currently sits on an impressive 1.74 million subscribers. He’s had many massive guests on his channel, including the likes of Phil Mickelson, retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady, Sergio Garcia and many more.
His most recent video was another instalment of a popular series DeChambeau runs on his channel, the Break 50 challenge. This episode featured Grant Horvat and GM Golf, and it currently sits on 3.3 million views on YouTube.
DeChambeau also did a Break 50 challenge with President Donald Trump, in which they pledged to donate $10,000 for every birdie and $20,000 for every eagle they made. 12 birdies and five eagles later and they pair donated a whopping $220,000 to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
He also set up The Bryson DeChambeau Foundation. This was set up with the aim of supporting junior golf initiatives, improving lives through health organisations, and to provide a new pathway to education.
Could Bryson DeChambeau Win The Masters?
The golf media sensation is now eyeing up the Masters as he will try and secure his third major trophy to join his two US Open victories.
When asked if he thought DeChambeau will be able to win the Masters, Foster said: "Can he win the Masters? Absolutely he can. He's one of the world's elite players and his extra length is a massive advantage for him."
DeChambeau’s driving distance is one of the main features and strengths of his game - and it probably explains a lot of his popularity as well. In 2024 DeChambeau averaged 332-yards driving distance!
Not many can honestly say they don't love seeing the pros smash them long, especially in one of the biggest tournaments of the season
How Bryson Reinvented Himself
Also worth mentioning, is DeChambeau’s past reputation. As he made the big decision to leave the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf, alongside others, many golf fans expressed their opinion that he wouldn't be missed. His chaotic interviews were not to be remembered fondly.
However, since making that decision, DeChambeau has somewhat ‘reinvented’ himself and shown a much different character on the tour and on his media channels. With also having on numerous occasions spent time with his fans and stayed behind after events for his followers.
With all this said, it's a very clear and appropriate statement that Bryson DeChambeau is indeed one of the most popular names in golf at the moment.
Ahead of an exciting season, where will see him compete for the majors, he may even take one home with him.
