The new golf season is edging closer and when most of us set goals for the months ahead, the prospect of improving your game, shooting better scores and lowering your handicap will be a chief objective.

While we all have our day when things click and we post a better-than-average score, the only way to ensure more consistent improvement is by enhancing different parts of our game.

The Golfshake Score Tracker - used by thousands of keen golfers each year - is a handy resource for keeping track of your own statistics and to see where you're gaining and losing on the golf course.

Sharing the averages across different handicap categories, looking at everything from scoring, fairways hit, greens-in-regulation, putts-per-round and even how many pars and birdies you should be making, we can share below the targets you must have in order to reach the next level.

Additionally, it's also a useful tool for seeing how you compare with other golfers of different standards to see where exactly you need to most improve.

Stats You Need - Handicaps 25-28

If you're someone who wants to break into the high 20s in terms of handicap, these are the numbers you should be looking to achieve this season.

  • Score: 97.5
  • Par 3 Avg: 4.40
  • Par 4 Avg: 5.65
  • Par 5 Avg: 6.75
  • #No. Fairways-in-Regulation: 7.07
  • #No. Greens-in-Regulation: 2.57
  • Pars-Per-Round: 2.75
  • Birdies-Per-Round: 0.37
  • Putts: 36.08

Stats You Need - Handicaps 20-25

Taking that to the next stage, regularly shooting in the low 90s, these are the stats that are routinely required.

  • Score: 93.5
  • Par 3 Avg: 4.15
  • Par 4 Avg: 5.38
  • Par 5 Avg: 6.35
  • #No. Fairways-in-Regulation: 7.86
  • #No. Greens-in-Regulation: 3.12
  • Pars-Per-Round: 3.69
  • Birdies-Per-Round: 0.54
  • Putts: 35.22

Stats You Need - Handicaps 15-20

Edging below 20 is a milestone for many golfers in terms of their handicap, as is regularly breaking 90, and the two go hand-in-hand as you can see below.

  • Score: 88.5

  • Par 3 Avg: 3.72
  • Par 4 Avg: 4.75
  • Par 5 Avg: 5.62
