Galvin Green Apollo Jacket Review
REVIEW: Galvin Green Apollo Jacket
Review by Kevin Paver
Galvin Green’s ‘APOLLO’ jacket is new for 2020 and from their highly regarded Part One collection. Featuring GORE-TEX Paclite Technology, the Apollo is one of the lightest waterproof jackets Galvin Green has produced. It also features front pockets… which is a new edition for Galvin Green jackets.
As for the GORE-TEX tech… it’s pretty impressive. The Gore-Tex membrane contains over 1.4 billion microscopic pores per square cm. These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule, which makes the GORE-TEX membrane completely waterproof from the outside, while allowing perspiration to escape from the inside. Told you it was impressive.
Looks
If you’re familiar with the Galvin Green brand, you’ll know that they make very good-looking waterproof jacket, and the Apollo jacket delivers on all counts.
It comes in some cool colours too - I tested in ‘Sharkskin’ which I loved, especially as I’d normally opt for a pretty boring black waterproof. I think they have done a really good job of producing a range that is a little more interesting, not to mention very modern… without going over the top.
Feel
Galvin Green has produced a pretty special jacket here. The Gore-Tex is super lightweight and provides stretch and flexibility in all the right places. Also, because it is so thin and light it makes it super easy to layer up in those chilly conditions, without feeling restricted during the golf swing.
Finally, the sleeves have Velcro cuffs and a drawstring waist to help get that perfect fit.
Performance
Now for the bit that really matters, how does the Apollo perform out on the course. As you will know if you live here in the UK, we had a long and horrific winter, which made test conditions perfect!
On the course, the Apollo’s Gore-Tex technology is some of the most waterproof on the market, and adding to that the super lightweight design, waterproof zips and not forgetting FRONT POCKETS… this is a jacket that will keep you perfectly dry, whatever the weather.
Summary
If you’re the kind of golfer that wants to play in all conditions, then this is certainly a jacket to consider. What Galvin Green has done, very cleverly, is deliver a jacket with supreme protection against the elements, but also one that is super lightweight.
As with many Galvin Green waterproof products, the thing that will perhaps put a lot of people off will be the price point. It is at the higher end of the market, with an RRP of around £290.
The Galvin Green Apollo is a premium waterproof jacket, with a premium price point. But don’t let that put you off, as if you do have that kind of cash to spend, you won’t go wrong with the Apollo.
