The 10 Longest Putts Ever Holed

Length is usually something we associate with drives, not putts. Even professionals tend to focus on mid-length putts, which they praise as the ‘score-makers’, over longer ones which even the most sure-sighted putters are just trying to lag. But, although they rarely travel 300 yards, a holed long putt can be just as impressive to see as a really big drive. To give you some inspiration next time you’re facing a 40 feet snake, here’s 10 of the longest putts ever holed.

Brett Stanford – 395 feet in a Casual Round in 2017 at Point Walter  

The longest putt by length on this list, this 395 feet monster was sunk by an Australian trick shot artist named Brett Stanford, breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest putt ever holed. Striking the putt from the 5th fairway of Point Walter Golf Course, Stanford’s ball bounced and dipped its way onto the green and into the hole. To give you an idea of just how amazing this putt was, 395 feet is 120 meters. That’s the length of a short par 3!

Jack Nicklaus – 110 feet in the 1964 Tournament of Champions at Desert Inn

It’s official. The Guinness Book of World Records recognises Jack Nicklaus’s putt in the 1964 Tournament of Champions as the longest one ever made in professional golf. The putt Nicklaus sunk to claim this unique line in the history books measured in at a whopping 110 feet long. That’s greater than the width of many golf greens!

Craig Barlow – 111 feet and 5 inches in Round 4 of the 2008 Buick Open at Warwick Hills

Although Jack Nicklaus’s 110 feet bomb has the Guinness Book of World Records’ stamp of approval, its not actually the longest putt on the PGA Tour. No, that honour instead belongs to Craig Barlow, a journeyman pro. In the since cancelled Buick Open in 2008, Barlow faced a putt on 111 feet and 5 inches on his final round’s very first hole. From this distance, most players would be lagging up, tapping in and getting out of there. But not Barlow. The American promptly stepped up and poured it straight into the middle of the hole.

Michael Phelps – 159 feet in the 2012 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Kingsbarns

Mention the words ‘World’ and ‘Record’ in regards to Michael Phelps and the first sport that comes to mind probably isn’t golf. The swimmer is the most successful Olympic athlete ever, with an incredible 23 gold medals. But the then 26 handicap golfer wrote his name into another sport’s record books when he holed a 159 feet putt in the 2012 Dunhill Links Championship. The putt secured a rare eagle on the par 4 6th hole, and broke Terry Wogan’s record for the longest putt ever holed on TV

Nick Price – 110 feet in the 1992 PGA Championship at Bellerive

Recognised alongside Nicklaus’s effort as the Guinness World Record is another 110 feet putt rammed home by the South African Nick Price. Impressively, Price also made the putt in a major championship, when the greens are often at their trickiest and running at incredible speeds. He accomplished the feat in the 1992 PGA Championship, held at Bellerive, winning the tournament to boot to claim his first ever victory in a major. Way to break that major duck in style!   

Angel Cabrera – 103 feet and 5 inches in Round 4 of the 2011 Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale

A more recent blow this, Angel Cabrera drained a monster in the final round of the 2011 Phoenix Open. The Argentinian golfer is not known for being a particularly hot putter, but that didn’t stop him from burying a 103 feet and 5 inches putt when the heat was on. As expected at the stadium-like TPC Scottsdale, the crowds who saw the putt drop went wild, making a fanfare so loud that Angel almost had to cover his ears! Only when Tiger Woods made a hole in one on the 16th hole in 1997, were the famous Phoenix crowds significantly rowdier.   

Terry Wogan – 100 feet in the 1981 Pro-Celebrity Competition at Gleneagles

Because they’re so rare, super long putts often escape being televised: the magic is confined to live viewers alone. Thankfully for golf fans, Terry Wogan’s 100ft bomb in a 1981 pro-celebrity competition at Gleneagles was filmed, opening the spectacle to TV viewers. The putt crested several hills, before taking a final, triumphant turn into the centre of the cup. An impressive stroke, whose entertainment factor is only bettered by the shockingly purple and red beret Wogan was sporting when he made the putt! The putt had the record for the longest putt ever to be holed on television, until it was beaten by Michael Phelps in 2012.

Jhonattan Vegas – 70 feet in Round 4 of the 2019 Player’s Championship at TPC Sawgrass

The 17^th green at TPC Sawgrass is not an immediate candidate for the holing of long putts. The green itself is perilously small, measuring only 78 feet long. Not a lot of room to make a big putt. This didn’t daunt Jhonattan Vegas though. After just hanging onto the edge of the left hand side of the green with his tee shot, the American had to navigate 70 feet right across to the Sunday pin position on the opposite side, hoping only to two-putt on the Player’s Championship Sunday and put pressure on McIlroy’s lead. For a second, it looked as though he’d missed it too high, but the putt took the turn at the last minute and dropped in, crowning the longest putt ever made on the 17^th green in competition.

Jack Nicklaus – 100 feet in a 2010 Match at Harbour Shores

Nicklaus is known for being a steely competitor and one of the best putters of all time. As well as holding the official Guinness World Record for the longest putt ever holed on the PGA Tour, Nicklaus buried another freakishly tough putt in a 2010 doubles match against Johnny Miller and Arnold Palmer. Stranded at the bottom of a hill on the green, Miller was determined to hit a chip. But Nicklaus, sportingly noting that if Miller chipped he would inappropriately damage the turf, said he really ought to putt it. To give him an incentive, he offered to show Miller how it should be done. The Golden Bear gave the ball an almighty whack, with the crowd going ballistic as the ball rattled into the cup.   

Tiger Woods – 91 feet in Round 2 of the 2014 WGC-Cadillac Championship

Woods’s body may have been ailing him during the 2014 season, but his putter most certainly was not. One of the jewels in the crown of a number of long bombs he dropped between 2013 and 2014 was this 91 feet leviathan at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. He drained the putt on the par 3 4^th hole, carding the first birdie on the hole on the day. Sadly, Woods would have to withdraw from the event due to injury problems, but, though it probably didn’t make up for the disappointment, the long putt was a small consolation.
