The Best New Drivers For Most Golfers

When it comes to gaining distance from the tee with a driver in hand, the speed of your swing is a key factor to improve on, but do you know just how quick your swing is?

If you visit a range with the requisite tracking technology or book an appointment with a PGA Professional, you can gain an understanding of what all your key statistics are, with these numbers being helpful when it comes to both knowing your own game and choosing the equipment that should be in your golf bag.

Your skill level, gender and age can all impact your stats. Typically, male golfers have speedier swings than female players, while older golfers naturally don't swing the club as fast as they used to. It goes without saying that better golfers - professionals and low handicappers - will usually record faster speeds on Trackman than the average person.

What is The Swing Speed of PGA Tour Golfers?

Long drive players can swing the club in excess of 140mph, but for the average star on the PGA Tour, the numbers range between 110 and 125mph with a driver. This contributes massively to the incredible distances we see these days in the highest levels of the sport, something that most of us wish we could achieve, but will most likely fall short of.

What is The Swing Speed of Amateur Golfers?

The average male golfer will have a swing speed in the low 90s (miles-per-hour), with single-digit handicappers edging towards 100mph, with scratch and elite level amateurs moving into three figures, averaging somewhere around 105mph.

Senior golfers will have swing speeds that dip into the 80s or even high 70s, as will higher handicaps and many female golfers, which is where drivers like these become something to consider in order to give you that extra support to remain competitive on the course.

Why is Your Swing Speed Important?

It's obvious to say, but the speed of your swing can directly correlate to the distance that you will hit the ball, but that doesn't diminish the importance of good technique and consistency. Just because you may hit the ball far doesn't mean that it will be accurate, and swinging it quickly doesn't guarantee consistency.

Indeed, as was explained in this recent tips video, you can gain distance by simply focusing on hitting the centre of the face more consistently.

However, if you can marry both together, that's what makes the best golfers on the planet stand out.

How Fast Do You Need to Swing to Drive The Ball 200, 250 or 300 Yards?

Your technique and club delivery will contribute hugely to the distance you drive the ball, but speed is a factor that can make all the difference.

When it comes to specifically reaching certain milestones - like 200, 250 or 300 yards - this is what Trackman has to say.

Trackman Swing Speed Data

Ultimately, if you want to be carrying the ball over 200 yards, then you need to have a swing speed that tracks into 90s.

But what speed should you be targeting to reach the next level? Let's take a look at what the raw numbers suggest.

Trackman Speed Data

This shows that to drive the ball over 250 yards, then you probably need to have a swing speed over 100mph, with those elite players able to carry the ball into the 300s having a speed of 120mph.

Which Drivers Are Best For Average Golfers?

Best 2025 Golf Drivers

As noted above, the majority of male golfers under senior age will have a swing speed in the 90s (miles-per-hour), and there are golf clubs out there that are most suited to that sort of profile.

Golfshake's Equipment Expert, Ryan Rastall has tested four of 2025's new drivers to discover just how swing speed impacts their performance to hopefully identify the club that would be most suitable for your game.

Looking specifically at the PING G440 Max, TaylorMade Qi35, Wilson DYNAPWR Max and Callaway Elyte, Ryan turns the spotlight on the leading brands to see just who could have the edge in the market this year.

Previously, Ryan did exactly the same analysis on drivers ideal for those with a swing speed of 85mph (ideal for seniors and higher handicap golfers), but this particular test focuses on a speed of 95mph that you may find relatable.

Each of the drivers featured have been adjusted to maximise their performance - with Ryan explaining just what he did to ensure that the clubs performed at their very best.

You can see his findings by watching the video below or directly on YouTube.
