Hmmm.
First, the positives. The layout has matured over the years, nice views, pace of play is fine and the fairways were half decent. The main downside is the greens (see pictures) and the state of the holes themselves. Yes, there had been a few heavy showers over the last 24 hours, so ... the obvious thing to do would be to move them. I enquired about this afterwards and the pro / manager stubbornly, and bluntly said he was of the opinion that they "were as good as Brocket Hall" and that he played on them and saw no issue. I kid you not.
I suggested that just shy of £27 for a weekday round with the greens in this sort of a dismal state didn't represent anything like good value. He maintained that he thought they were "good". I said we'd have to agree to disagree. The greens were okay in areas. But the hole locations were in a very sorry state.
I will put photos below and you can judge for yourself. Are these good greens? I played at Aspley Guise two day before, and these were what you'd call "good". The greens at Panshanger are slow, bumpy, worn around the hole, crowned to hell, divoted and muffed in so the hole was as much as 75% of the actual size it should be.
And if he types a retort below this to the contrary then he's even more of a ... than he's already proven to be. He added that the holes would be changed the following day, as it was their Captain's Day. To which I said "that's all well and good, but how does that help me today...paying full whack?"
He was less than understanding. Neither of us were rude, nor heated. There's no point talking to someone who's that unwilling to listen. So here's the pics. I did mention the positives to him, as I'm always keen to provide fair, objective and unbiased reviews for the benefit of would-be visitors. Please note, the pro is no longer Richard May. He left years ago.

Best Public Course in the Area
Playing very well at the moment. Still one of the best public courses I have ever played on, a thought echoed by moist people I have played with on this course.Reviewer Rating

Disgraceful!
No enforcement of tee times. By midday they were running at least 45 minutes late. A marshal told us it was because of a slow society, but did nothing about it?Reviewer Rating

Worth a visit
Not an easy course to play, with some tight fairways and well placed bunker. Mostly in good condition although some tee boxes were looking worn, and large stones in some bunkers. But worth a visit.Reviewer Rating

Good value
Challenging course, quite hilly. Well looked after and great value for the price. Excellent bar with balcony, and nice touch having a TV with delayed replay of the 18th hole.Reviewer Rating

Very Good Value
Reviewed Feb 2024 Winter rules. Considering the weather conditions, wet and soggy underfoot the course is in good condition and is still open. Never crowded apart from in height of summer. very challenging course particularly for anyone with a slice. Greens running well despite being wet and spongy.Reviewer Rating
