Reader Review - Mizuno MP-S Ball
Mizuno have made a big move in the past 2 years and with it significantly increasing their product line-up by producing a high quality range of balls to rival those produced by other manufacturers.
We recently got our hands on the new range of Mizuno balls which is made up of three models - The MP-S, MP-X and JPX. Given Mizuno's history of producing superb product, we couldn't wait to get out and give the new balls a go. Here is how we got on with the Mizuno MP-S ball:
Mizuno MP-S Ball
What Mizuno say:
Dubbed ‘the ball that loves to spin’ on its introduction – the MP-S is Mizuno’s softest, most responsive ball. The 2015 edition maintains that trait, whilst adding the dimension of increased long game distance.
The 2015 edition features a larger inner core and thinner urethane cover – adding yards to the long game of mid/high swing speeds. The cover thickness is reduced to just 0.5mm, increasing velocity from the tee, while a 330 dimple configuration creates a highly efficient flight.
“The MP-S is a high feel golf ball that works great for mid to high swing speeds - we’ve matched this ball to players who like a little spin to help their ball flight,” said Alex Thorne, Head of Tour Operations. It’s still very responsive around the greens, for guys who like the ball to check up.”
- Refined Urethane Cover: Reduced to 0.5mm thickness for increased initial velocity.
- 330 Dimple pattern: Configured for more stable ball flight.
- 3 piece construction: Adapted for high ball speeds and responsiveness.
Owen's Review (Golfshake Staffer) Hcp +2
Love it! Felt fantastic off the face, flew well and did not seem to spin too much and 'float' which I was a little worried about. Great around the greens offering a soft feel and great spin control. Worthy of it's price tag and a real rival to the best balls on the market.

Found my dispersion with Driver was much better than with the MP-X although on strike the 'S' didn't feel a soft as the 'X' but the results I had were pretty much the same.
Kevin's Review Hcp 16
The real winner for me was the MP-S, which was pretty unexpected. The ball flight was great in play, was very stable, and it didn’t have outrageous spin. It felt great off the face of the club, and had good response when hitting into the greens.
I guess this is their ball to challenge the Pro-V1 market, and they have actually produced something that could really give it a run for its money. It’s definitely worth a try if you do play that ball.
Kieran's Review Hcp 12
Generally, I like to play with a softer ball. I feel much more comfortable with my irons and short-game when using them, so the MP-S was naturally something that I enjoyed utilising.
Using this ball felt like a harkening back to the old days. And that is a positive. The flight was less direct through the air, with the ball being undeniably more receptive to movement and spin. If you’re a player with a reliable shot-shape, the MP-S will be intriguing to use.
If you are someone who plays a softer more responsive ball, I suspect that you will feel positive about this product after using it for a few rounds. It certainly offered control.
Of course, the question to be asked for the Mizuno products is whether they are any better than the other leading manufacturers. The balls are quality – but so are the others available in the market. It will be down to the individual player to decide if they wish to move from Titleist or Callaway to Mizuno, but if you are looking for a change – I would certainly recommend the new Mizuno balls. They are very good.
