Brian Campbell What's In The Bag And Player Profile
America's Brian Campbell enjoyed a huge slice of luck as he beat Aldrich Potgieter in a playoff to win the Mexico Open.
The big-hitting South African Potgieter, 20, had held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round as he chased his first PGA Tour win.
He finished with a 71 as Campbell went one better to take the contest to a playoff at the par-five 18th.
After both men missed birdie chances, they returned to the 18th tee. Campbell sliced his tee shot, which was heading out of bounds until it hit a tree and bounced back into play.
Potgieter found a bunker short of the green and was then unable to hole his birdie putt. It left Campbell with a four-foot putt to secure the first win of his professional career.
He said: "You've got to get those breaks sometimes. Unfortunately I hit a really bad tee shot there, caught the tree, was able to keep it in play and get ourselves in a good position to get a wedge and keep the pressure on. I was just so happy that I was able to kind of stay in it to the end."
Potgieter, who won the 2022 Amateur Championship at age 17 and last year became the youngest to win on the Korn Ferry Tour, said: "Hopefully, my time will come soon. Pressure is a big thing. You can't beat it. You just have to learn and adjust to it the next time."
Isaiah Salinda posted a final round of six-under to finish clear in third place, one shot back on 19 under. England's Aaron Rai shot a 67 for a tie for fifth place with American Ben Griffin at 18-under.
Player Profile
Born on March 6, 1993, in Newport Beach, California, Brian Campbell was introduced to golf at an early age.
Growing up in a sports-mad family, Campbell’s older brother, Derek, was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and played baseball at the University of California.
Campbell attended Mater Dei High School in California. His impressive performance in the AJGA Mission Hills Desert Junior and top 20 finishes in three other AJGA tournaments marked him out as an emerging talent, drawing the attention of numerous colleges. Hel chose to attend the University of Illinois and in his junior year he set a school record with a season scoring average of 71.08.
He qualified for the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay as an amateur, finishing in a tie for 27th place and was the tournament’s low amateur.
He turned professional in 2015 and although he gained his PGA Tour card, he lost it in 2017 but vowed to get it back. His determination finally paid off in 2024 when he secured his spot on the PGA Tour for the 2025 season by finishing seventh on the points list after three runner-up finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour.
Campbell’s consistency during the 2024 season was a testament to his work ethic. He missed only four cuts in 25 Korn Ferry Tour starts, finishing in the top five for total birdies, scrambling, and driving accuracy.
This was his first win in 28 starts on the PGA Tour. The win took him from 163rd to 12th in the FedEx Cup standings.
