The Best Golf Course to Play in Winter

Inclement weather and difficult course conditions can make playing golf in winter unappealing for many of us, but if you are fortunate enough to have access to a layout that drains well and retains its conditioning throughout the colder months, then it can be a joy to continue playing at this time of the year.

Golfshake Ambassador Matt Holbrook is based in Suffolk and regularly plays at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club during winter. One of England's most historic courses, Felixstowe Ferry is just a short drive from Ipswich, making it a highly accessible and welcoming place to visit.

It's set to become even better in the coming years, but it's already Highly Recommended on Golfshake and is routinely rated as one of the finest courses in the South East of England - and its qualities are most obvious in winter when its playability makes it a most attractive proposition for any keen golfer.

Reviewing the layout back in 2022, Matt said: "Felixstowe is fun, Felixstowe is tough. Felixstowe is a really strong classic links course that depending on the weather and, more importantly, the wind direction, can give and take away in equal measure."

Describing the winter experience there, he later commented: "I play in some winter events run locally to me at Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club - and we have had some spectacular days over there with the sunrise and sun setting. You play in four balls as pairs so you get golf with your mates, by the sea, and a perfect fish and chips after."

If that sounds good, then we have a treat for you, as Matt has shared a new video that showcases all 18 holes, including drone flyovers, and his full round in under 20 minutes, giving you a detailed insight into Felixstowe Ferry and why it's an essential round in winter - and beyond.
