What You Need To Know About The 2024 Olympics Golf

By: | Tue 30 Jul 2024

THE Olympic Games men’s and women’s golf tournaments are unique in that they each feature fields of 60 who will play 72 holes over 4 days in a stroke play competition at Le Golf National with no prize money at stake.

The winner will receive a gold medal, the runner-up a silver and a bronze for third. Xander Schauffele defends the men’s title while Nelly Korda is the defending women’s champion.

When is golf at the Olympics taking place?

The men’s tournament starts on Thursday August 1st and finishes on Sunday August 4th, while the women’s event tees off on Wednesday August 7th and finishes on Saturday August 10th.

Where is golf at the Olympics being played?

The competition will take place at Le Golf National, a par 72 golf course measuring 7,331 yards. It opened in 1990 and its natural hills provide fabulous views for spectators. There is a lot of water and the rough is thick and juicy, which means accuracy from the tee is essential. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018 when Europe thrashed the USA.

Who's previously won at the Olympics?

The men's event was won in 2016 by Justin Rose and in 2021 by Xander Schauffele.

The women's event was won in 2016 by Inbee Park and in 2021 by Nelly Korda.

How do golfers qualify for the Olympics?

For Olympic eligibility, the top 15 players in the world rankings are able to compete, with a restriction of four players per country, which explains the presence of four American players in the men's team and three in each team for the women for American and South Korea. For those beyond the top 15, eligibility is determined by the world rankings, with a maximum of two players per country if that country does not already have two or more players in the top 15.

Additionally, every one of the five continents is ensured at least one golfer in each event. If a continent does not have a qualified player based on the world rankings, the remaining spots are given to the highest-ranked golfers from that continent without representation.
