Jhonattan Vegas Victorious at 3M Open - First Win in Seven Years

By: | Mon 29 Jul 2024

Jhonattan Vegas sorted out business in some style as he won the 3M Open. It was his first victory for seven years and earned him a bumper payday but, more important than any of that, it secured his place on the PGA Tour for at least another two full seasons.

Vegas captured his fourth PGA Tour victory at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, after a birdie at the final hole saw him beat Max Greyserman by a shot. Greyserman shot a back-nine 6-under 30 to get to 16 under, but Vegas birdied the 16th and 18th holes.

The last time Vegas won was in 2017, claiming the Canadian Open for the second straight year. His 3M win came in his 299th Tour start, and it happened in the midst of a poor year that had him on the verge of losing his playing privileges.

After an average approach into the par-five 18th on the front of the green, Vegas faced a lengthy eagle look, but needing a birdie to secure the win, he nestled it close and knocked in the putt.

For Greyserman, a Tour rookie, it was the best finish of his career. He shot 8-under 63 to vault up the leaderboard, and the finish will move him into the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings to 63rd. Vegas moved 83 spots from 149th to 66th and it should be good enough to get him into the FedEx St Jude, the first of the season-ending playoffs.

Jhonattan Vegas Player Profile

Vegas was born in Maturin, Venezuela on August 19, 1984.

He played college golf at the University of Texas and turned professional in 2008, playing on the Nationwide Tour in 2009 before making it to the PGA Tour two years later.

Vegas represented Venezuela in the 2009 World Cup with Alfredo Adrian, where they finished tied for 12th place.

Vegas won his first Nationwide Tour event in 2010 at the Wichita Open. He finished the season seventh on the money list and earned his 2011 PGA Tour card, the first Venezuelan to do so.

On 23 January 2011, he won his first PGA Tour event, the Bob Hope Classic, defeating Bill Haas and Gary Woodland in a playoff. It was only his fifth overall start on the PGA Tour and the second as a member of the tour. The victory was the first by a Venezuelan and earned Vegas a place in the field for The Masters and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. In his next start he finished in a tie for 3rd at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Vegas started 2013 with three missed cuts and then had to sit out the remainder of the 2013 season after shoulder surgery. He attempted to regain his PGA Tour status through the Web.com Tour Finals but fell short and started the 2013–14 season on a Medical Extension. He satisfied his medical extension with a T3 finish at the John Deere Classic.

Vegas finished the 2014–15 season 153rd in the FedEx Cup and just outside the top 25 in the Web.com Tour Finals, limiting him to past champion status for the 2015–16 PGA Tour season. After some near-wins, he earned his second career PGA Tour win at the Canadian Open. He also represented Venezuela at the 2016 Olympic Games.

In July 2017 he successfully defended his title at the Canadian Open for his third PGA Tour win. The win also moved him to a career-high 48th in the OWGR.

Vegas peaked at 35th in the world and in 2017, became the first player from Venezuela to compete in the Presidents Cup. In 2021, he once again represented his country at the Olympics.

He started the 3M Open in 149th place in the FedEx Cup standings and 321st in the world rankings.

In 299 starts on the PGA Tour he has won four times, made 198 cuts and enjoyed three runner-up place, four thirds and 17 top fives, with career earnings of around $18m.

He averages 310.9 yards from the tee, finds 62.07% of fairways and hits 72.81% of greens in regulation. He averages 29.92 putts per round, has a scoring average of 69.49, averages 3.98 birdies per round and gets up and down from the sand 42.50% of the time.
