The Golfers That Will Lead Team GB Hopes at The Olympic Games

By: Golfshake Editor | Wed 17 Jul 2024

Team GB's hopes of medal-winning golfers will be led by four individuals at the Olympic Games in Paris this year, and they will be equally divided between the men's and women's events.

The Olympic golf events are typically viewed to carry less prestige and stature than any of the majors that are held annually. Nevertheless, this year's games will offer several British stars the rare opportunity to potentially climb an Olympic podium.

Here we look at all of Team GB's participants and their medal potential this summer.

Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood is arguably Team GB's greatest hope of a medallist across the golfing events this year. For the men's event, he is offered at 20/1 to win the gold medal on golf betting sites, which means finishing first may be a stretch but reaching the podium is a huge possibility.

Fleetwood will not be focusing on his Olympics' participation until the final week of July, as he has the Open Championship to see through first. He is a significant underdog in the Open odds at 25/1 which means securing any form of major success this summer would be remarkable.

Fleetwood's past golfing experience - of marginally missing out on the US Open and Open Championship - is evidence that he is capable of competing for the top honours in golf and his best opportunity to finally secure a crowning moment could come in the Olympics this year.

The top-ranked players typically do not produce their peak performances at the games and that could see the margins that have seen him miss out on success previously, now turn in his favour.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick contrastingly is a Team GB participant who has a major golf win to his name - the 2022 US Open - however he is still seen to have a smaller chance of success at the Olympics compared to Fleetwood.

The Sheffield-born player is offered at 33/1 to win gold, which means his chances of being the outright winner are incredibly slim. He was never expected to win a major in his career, though, and he upset the odds to manage that.

The Englishman has an immense level of determination that could see him force his way into the fight for a place on the podium this year.

Charley Hull

Charley Hull is Team GB's most realistic medal hope in the women's side of things, she is offered at 25/1 to win gold in Paris. Similar to Fleetwood, she has enjoyed a strong career so far, but has yet to secure a significant victory to mark clear success.

Hull finished second in both the Women's Open and the US Women's Open in 2023 which would suggest she is on the verge of getting over the line when it comes to major glory.

She will also carry prior Olympic experience into this year's event - having finished seventh at Rio 2016 - which will provide her with strong ground to build on.

Georgia Hall

Georgia Hall has an outside chance of making an impact at the Olympic Games this year - offered at 40/1 to finish at the peak of the women's golf standings.

Hall has struggled in the major championships of recent years and will need to recapture a level of form to rival her successful 2018 Women's Open showing if she is to push for the podium in Paris.

Ultimately, Team GB does not have a leading favourite within its ranks in either the men's or women's events in Paris. However, it does have four stars with strong records and anything can happen amidst the pressure of the grandest stage in sport.
