Ewen Ferguson What's In The Bag & Player Profile
Ewen Ferguson secured his third DP World Tour title, winning the BMW International Open in Munich by two strokes and, in the process, landed a coveted place at this month's Open Championship at Royal Troon.
It was the 28-year-old Scot’s his first victory since 2022 after a series of near-misses and was achieved with a four-under-par final round of 68, taking him to 18 under overall.
"I honestly can't believe it," Ferguson said. "The last four holes I felt like I was in a dream, I just didn't think this was actually happening. It was crazy.
"I was hitting it so well, I was hitting it so much further than usual. I wanted to do it for my dad, my mum, my sister, my brother at home. I love them so much and every shot I hit I hit with them in mind.
"The exemption with this is so much weight off my shoulders. I'm so happy. Teeing it up in Troon, the Open Championship is a tournament that everyone wants to play in and I feel like I could do well there and the Scottish Open next week too."
Englishman Jordan Smith, who jointly led with Ferguson overnight, and Australian David Micheluzzi shared second.
Ferguson's compatriot Connor Syme tied for fourth place on 14 under along with England's Matthew Southgate.
Only two Scots, Sandy Lyle and Colin Montgomerie, have previously won this tournament and Ferguson became the first Scottish player to win a DP World Tour event since Robert MacIntyre's Italian Open victory in 2022.
He was in the field at last year's Open Championship at Hoylake and qualifies this year as one of the top five top-20 players in the Race to Dubai not otherwise exempt. This year's Open takes place next week.
Player Profile
Ferguson was born in Glasgow in July 1996. He won the British Boys and Scottish Boys Championships in 2013 and represented GB&I at the Walker Cup in 2015. He turned professional in 2016 and competed on the Challenge Tour in 2018 and 2019. In 2021 he was a runner-up three times on the Challenge Tour and qualified for the DP World Tour.
Ferguson turned professional in August 2016 and in November 2017 made the final stage of the European Tour Q-School and finished in 76th place. He then competed full-time on the Challenge Tour in 2018 and 2019, with a best finish of runner-up at the Euram Bank Open in 2019 and finished 25th in the 2019 Road to Mallorca Challenge Tour rankings. In 2019 he had a best finish on the DP World Tour Tour of third at the Belgian Knockout.
Covid hit before the start of the 2020 Challenge Tour season and so with a freeze on demotions and promotions from the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour, Ferguson took advantage of his category and nearly managed to play a full DP World Tour schedule. Returning to the Challenge Tour in 2021 he was a runner-up three times and had three other top-10 finishes, and finished 8th in the Road to Mallorca Challenge Tour rankings, securing his full DP World Tour card for the first time.
He won his maiden title, the Qatar Masters, in March 2022 and added the ISPS Handa World Invitational five months later.
The win in Germany takes him to 16th in the Race to Dubai and 104th in the world rankings. In 103 starts he has made 60 cuts, winning three times, second once and third on two occasions. He also has a further 10 top-10 finishes to his name.
