IT HAS been a while coming but, finally, Jon Rahm has secured his first victory since joining Liv Golf for a reported $450m.

The Spaniard has had a disappointing year and was emotional after winning Liv Golf UK with a little help from Tyrrell Hatton. The Englishman was tied with Rahm playing the final hole but dropped a shot to finish in a tie for second place.

Hatton had a six-foot putt on the 18th to force a playoff but was unable to hole it.

Rahm had finished no worse than T-10 since moving over to LIV, but he also had not won anything in more than a year. But that all changed as he shot 4-under 67 and finished at 13 under for the week at JCB Golf and Country Club, beating Hatton, Joaquin Niemann and Cameron Smith by a shot.

On the par-3 17th, Rahm three-putted for bogey, falling back into a tie with Hatton. But then Hatton three-putted the 54th hole, opening the door for Rahm to win for the first time.

“"To get over the hump feels quite incredible although you never want to see it end like that,” Rahm said. “I wish we had gone to a playoff.”

Who Is Jon Rahm?

Rahm was born in Barrika, Biscay, Spain on November 10, 1994. He was born with a club foot and spent much of his early life in hospital after a series of operations. His lack of mobility in his right foot restricts his backswing but his huge thigh muscles allow him to generate a prodigious amount of power.

Despite that, Rahm was a prodigiously talented amateur, reaching number one in the amateur world rankings for a record 60 weeks. 

He turned professional in 2016 after finishing 23rd in the US Open. He finished third in the Quicken Loans in his first start as a professional and qualified for The Open. He was second at the Canadian Open and in January 2017 he won the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, holing a 60-foot putt to secure the title. 

He has gone on to win 11 times on the PGA Tour and his victory at the DP World Tour Championship in 2022 was his ninth on the DP World Tour. His first major success came at the US Open in 2021 and he climbed to number one in the world rankings.

He began the 2023 Genesis in first place in the FedEx Cup standings and his victory there took him back to the top of the world rankings. The win was his third of 2023 - he also took the Tournament of Champions and American Express, finished third at the Phoenix Open and tied seventh at the Farmers Insurance Open. His win at Riviera also took his earnings for the season to $10m - before the end of February.

He then won the 2023 Masters at Augusta, meaning he had pocketed around $13m in prize money alone by the end of April. It was his fourth win in 10 starts last season. He had missed one cut and had to withdraw from the Players Championship due to illness. He also became the fourth Spaniard to win at Augusta after Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia and he is the first European to win The Masters and the US Open.

He is married to Kelley Cahill, whom he met at Arizona State University. She was a useful athlete and a good tennis player. They were married in 2019 and Rahm designed her wedding ring. They have two children.

When he finished third at the Phoenix Open in February 2023 it took his career earnings on the PGA Tour past $40m. It took him just 136 career starts to achieve the feat.

His victory at The Masters took him back No1 in the world rankings and consolidated his position at the top of the FedEx Cup standings. It also meant he has now won two majors. This was his fourth victory of the year - exactly the number achieved by Scottie Scheffler when he claimed the Green Jacket 12 months earlier.

Rahm rocked the world of golf at the end of 2023 when he announced that he was defecting to Liv Golf, a tour he had dismissed as an exhibition series. He was rumoured to have been paid in the region of $450m. He is now ranked 10th in the world.
