The Most Played & Most Reviewed Golf Courses in 2020

By: Golfshake Editor | Fri 01 Jan 2021

Here at Golfshake we enjoy compiling a variety of golf course lists and recommendation features from the data derived from our leading online golf course directory and review system.

Rather than simply providing a list of the 'best' or 'top ranked' courses we hope our lists and features serve as a way to feature and highlight as many golf courses as possible based on a varied range of categories.

With 2020 now behind us and having just completed the Golfshake 2020 year in review, below we take a slightly different look at the Golfshake data and identifiy the most popular courses in terms of those played and those reviewed in 2020 via the Golfshake system.

The Most Played Courses in 2020

The 5 courses below all had several thousand rounds tracked against them from the members of the Golfshake Score Tracker in 2020 and serve as some popular venues whilst still being highly rated from the Golfshake reviews.

Stonebridge Golf Club, Warwickshire

Thoughts From Golfshake Reviewers

Wallasey

We also heard from 2 of Golfshake's most prolific course reviewers this year who provided some insights into their golf in 2020.  Both are not attached to a golf club so tend to play a wider variety of golf courses with both reviewing well over 50 courses on Golfshake in 2020. Steven K commented:

"I’m not a member of a golf course which at present, suits my circumstances. I travel a lot and whilst 2020 has restricted this, I’ve still managed to play circa. 60 rounds at over 50 different courses which is consistent with previous years. As a non-member, it has been harder to obtain tee times due to various Covid related restrictions/courses not taking visitor bookings, which is understandable.

I enjoy the variety of experiencing new courses, it’s always hard to pick favourites but this year my favourite ‘new’ course was Wallasey – a true links course with some brutal rough and excellent views. Best round of the year, Kilspindie ; my first sub-80 on Golfshake on a classic Scottish links course. My overall favourite course though hasn’t changed. For me, Ganton has a charming ‘going back in time’ feel about it. The course offers a links feel with brutal bunkering combined with heathland aspects. If I lived closer, contradicting myself, I’d join tomorrow!"

Due to this geographic location Pete H is also not averse to travelling to play golf:

"I live in London so am used to getting out of town to play. Pre March Lockdown it was as wet as now & it was a case of finding where drained best at my budget. Banstead Downs was the answer & went back in Autumn. During the Summer I also sought out some new James Braid courses to play and thoroughly enjoyed Romford & Henley.  Nearer to London, both Harewood Downs & Brickendon were brilliant. The greens at Harewood were the best I played on all year."

The Top Rated Courses in 2020

An additional mention must go to the following 5 courses who all had more than 5 reviews submitted with every review being submitted for the overall rating being 5*. This are 5 venues that should be on every golfers list to play!

Enville Golf Club, Staffordshire

Enville

"The course was in great condition, greens quick and true, aprons manicured. The course is wonderfully designed, in particular the back nine all the holes were stunning."

Enville Feature Review

Cumberwell Park Golf Club, Wiltshire

"Such a great set up. So many options for a good round of golf weather that be 9 holes or a full 18 or even a full day of 36. great courses and each one different."

"Very enjoyable day. Course in excellent condition. Highly recommend the course and everyone very friendly and welcoming."

The West Lancashire Golf Club, Merseyside

"A wonderful Links and truly worth a visit. Being a member I am in the fortunate position of playing the course regularly. Nevertheless, it is, amongst its peers on the North West Coast, one of the best."
