What the club says: Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club is the first golf course to be have been built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSi) since the days of "Old Tom" himself. It is also the first 18-hole links golf course to be built on the west coast of Scotland in 100 years.
Set hard against the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Machrihanish Dunes shares breathtaking views with the adjacent Machrihanish Golf Club links (ranked 39th by Golf Digest's "Top 100 Courses Outside the U.S." in 2008).
True to The Way Golf Began, the site of Machrihanish Dunes links featured 23 "natural holes" (definition: a hole which fits so well into the natural landscape prior to construction that only minimal effort is required to ready it for play in terms of grading and shaping work). Measuring 7300 yards, Machrihanish Dunes features six greens and five tees at the ocean’s edge.

Playing thru, over and round sand Dunes on fairly open fairways, some blind hole's, few dogleg's is challenging but fun.Reviewer Rating

Macrahanish is full of history and romance, after all it was designed by Old Tom Morris himself! My partner and I teed off on a blustery winters morning. The 1st tee shot across the bay is certainly intimidating, but I managed to send the ball on to the green halcyon turf of the fairway beyond, and after a long iron into the waiting green, walked off with a par 4 start. The second is a 5 wood lay up to the river, and then a blind shot up over the ridge to the higher elevation where I found the bowl shaped green. The third really starts to get interesting, as we turn towards the Atlantic surf, and dog-leg fairways that undulate quite dramatically. The quality of the turf is superb, and the course drains well, even after heavy downpours. I found the Greenside bunker here, and bogeyed. The 4th is an enticing par 3, but you can't be short or long as you will find deep swales to chip from. I placed a wedge tee shot to within 12 feet of the hole and rolled it in for a birdie 2. I was back on track! The 5th to 9th were quite sheltered by the high dunes, and you really have to find the fairways with your tee shot, as the marram grass rough can be punishing. I reached the turn in 46, and so began the turn back into the sleety wind. There is a long par 5 at the 12th, with a narrow fairway neck. I was happy to walk off with a 6 as the ball was not travelling as far now. The closing holes bring you back to the flatter ground that stretches towards the hotel, and I came home safely with two 5's for a total of 90 (minus 14) to give me a 76 in brutal homeward conditions. I was soaked, but happy with my experience of this magical links course. I will definitely return when it is warmer and calmer.Reviewer Rating

Golf in the raw at its best
Mach Dunes shows what a genius David McLay Kidd is. Built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest. No fertiliser, only sheep and laid out with the minimum of alteration to the original dunes, only the tees were levelled out.Reviewer Rating
