What the club says: Monmouth Golf Club celebrated its’ centenary in 1996 and has every justification for its claim to be one of the prettiest courses in Wales as the course stands on high ground above the town of Monmouth with superb views of the Welsh Hills, Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. The undulating parkland course is 5698 yards off the white tees, 5507 off yellow (Par 69, SSS 67) and 5118 yards off the Ladies’red tees (Par 72 SSS 72).

After not playing the course for a number of years due to Covid we decided would go back and give the old haunt a go.
The facilities are outdated and poor. A quote on the club house ‘lovely clubhouse’ is ambitious to say the least…
But it’s how it’s always been, it keeps your head dry and the pints are served cold, even if in a dirty glass.
The course has always been quirky. But with the layout, positioning and views the course has always been well maintained; taking care of what it has.
Sadly, the course has fallen quite badly with its standards. The greens are in short unplayable.
The winter tee mats which have been in play due to the courses hatred of water have been upgraded, but still remain of fairly poor quality as you cannot get a tee to stay in them!
Outside of the golf the food served was well cooked and a hearty portion. But the hospitality to go along with it was in short, the worst experience we have received at a golf course.
It was the final nail in the coffin.
We are always looking to support local business, but sadly we won’t be coming back.

Was here on a friendly game for my club. The members were a delight and the course is in superb condition. If you're visiting for the first time I would imagine playing this course is pretty challenging as their are many blind shots. If you youtube this club, the Hairy Golfer has done a vlog to give you some idea of where you're going. This could be useful.
The round starts really hard with OoB on the left and then some tight tee shots but it generally gets easier as you go around. There are some really interesting holes on this course which don't automatically require you to smash a driver. This is a more tactical golf course with some very small greens.
It is a very hilly course (its reputation is true). If you're not fit I would suggest investing in a buggy but I managed it without but I am fairly active, however I played on a hot day and needed to get extra water at the 13th because you're walking up hill at least 7 out of the 18 holes and one litre was not enough. The benefits of the hills other than making golf more interesting is that all the way around, you're treated with great view of the valley which makes even a poor game of golf worth it. It reminded me of my favourite course Cotswold edge in places for both the views and the tactical play.
The greens were in very good condition but they are a very small target. I only hit 17% of greens in regulation 5% down on my average this season so far. You're likely to be chipping and putting from the edges a lot. My only gripe is that some of the ball washers hadn't been filled up with water and I didn't see a warm up net.
I would highly recommend this course.. Although I had this on a bargain rate with my club, I will rate the value for money based on the green fees advertised on the website and on golfnow (I'm a very stingy golfer and a club wanting more than £25 a round at the weekend should be something special and this is a club I do plan on visiting again as a social round I have been impressed.

Fantastic golf course
Golf course is really good with many different holes/challenges - the views are exceptional. Be aware there is a lot of up and down but this also helps to make it a good course. Unfortunately the tee boxes were in need of attention and the greens had lots of bare patches, having said that it did not disappoint us. Men?s senior caption spoke to us in the car park as he was off before us and was very friendly, as was the lady checking us in and then providing us with tea and bacon baps after our round, lots of option even gluten free. Will always return, cost very reasonable.Reviewer Rating
