What the club says: The golf course at Bovey Castle is a challenging and beautiful 18-hole championship course, designed in 1926 by J F Abercromby, one of the finest British golf course designers of the century. When the course opened in 1930, it quickly gained national acclaim for its reputation as one of the most enjoyable places to play golf.
Designed to rival its sister courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry, this course has been described as an experience of golf never to be forgotten, presenting the pure challenge of golf to professional and amateur alike. The course meanders through the hotel estate, surrounded by idyllic landscape and challenges to meet any handicap.

Would definitely recommend
The river Bovey snakes it’s way through the front nine making it by far the prettiest half of the course. Take a ball retriever with you as you will probably need it. Back nine is more parkland in style but just as enjoyable. Greens were in excellent condition and there was minimal GUR which is impressive considering how wet it has been. Played here once before, many years ago, and it was even better than I remembered.Reviewer Rating

Lovely course that does not cater for golfers
Played Bovey this weekend as part of a 3 game weekend as a group of 8.Pre booked our tee times well in advance and was not disappointed with the course , amazing and in great condition but ther is a big But !!!
Turned up 1 and ate hours early to relax and have a coffee etc and take in the atmosphere.
When to pro shop / hut to check in and asked where we can get the coffees only to be told you can’t !! Why not ?? Residents only !!!, ok we will buy some soft drinks, sorry only got warm water !!! Had no choice to purchase, can we buy some chocolate for half way round please, answer haven’t got any !!! So all in all for a course of this stature and status just appalling they really do need to sort this out, had empty terraces that no one was using overlooking the grounds, utterly disappointing and frustrating, come on Bovey castle sort it out !!!

Thinking players course
Before i played here there had been a lot of rain over a couple of weeks so i was expecting a damp round.Pro shop: Very sparse in terms of stock but they have gloves, balls, some clothing, drinks No equipment such as clubs or bags etc to buy, staff helpful and pleasant.
Practice facilties: I personally do not think many courses/golf centres have grassed range facilities. It is a bugbare of mine that this is not more common. Bobey castle has an excellent grassed range area with a covered couple of raised mats if the weather is particularly bad. The mowed grass could have done with being removed to see the dispersion a bit better but all in all a very pleasant practice area which warmed me up for palying the course. It has a well kept chipping green but i noted no practice bunker. there is a lovely putting green up by the first tee.
The Course: One negative the tees are very poor in size and condition. Not very well rolled or closely mowed. On the positives, the first none holes are down at the base of the valley, with streams and ponds everywhere, so thinking off the tee is important. the first is a tease sensible play will see you come off with a par easily. Once you hit the back nine ot starts to get a little more hill and undulating. The greens were true and even, if a bit slow but that was due to the rain. Considering the amount of rain the course had drained very well, my ball did plug on the greens a couple of times. Bunkers were in really good condition. I used a buggy and other players were friendly and polite and allowed me to play through.
I shot a great ground and felt it was a course that requires concentration so i would definatley play again.

Varied and challenging course in superb setting
This is a cracking course that has two distinct nines. The front nine winds around the valley at the bottom of this beautiful estate and has the river Bovey intersecting virtually all of its holes. The second nine is on higher, undulating ground and has more of a parkland/moorland feel including a number of blind shots on the closing holes. The 3rd, 7th, 10th and 11th were particularly memorable/challenging holes while the 18th is arguably the toughest, saved until last.
It's not a particularly long course but presents a variety of challenges.
Our party booked two rounds and accommodation in the superb castle for only ?139 which was a real bargain and a visit here is highly recommended.

Wonderful
I note a few gripes about the prices of drinks. The course is part of a luxury (and amazing) hotel, so is to be expected. I live in Newquay and have played pretty much all the great South West courses like St Enedoc, Saunton and Trevose. I know they are links but this is the most beautiful and probably challenging. For mid-Winter it was also surprisingly firm. Wonderful course in wonderful setting.Reviewer Rating

Fantastic
Wow what a course. Played here on holiday, ?37.50 with full English so can't grumble! Golfers car park is a bit strange, about enough to hold 10 cars tucked out of the way. Front nine is great, plot your way around the river which flows through with tight greens, back nine, relax and swing away as it opens up. Very dry for time of year. In superb condition, greens quick and testing. Overall loved this track, one of my top ten, so if your on holiday, Chuck your clubs in and play...it's millionaires golf in the week!!Reviewer Rating
