What the club says: Thetford Golf Club is a challenging par 72 course set amidst the beautiful Breckland Forest of East Anglia, with easy access from the A11. Pine, oak, birch and beech trees line the fairways and gorse, broom and heather lie in wait any ball that might stray from the wide-open fairways. It really is a wonderful place to play golf. Come and visit us at Thetford for a friendly welcome, great hospitality and good food. A super day out!

Excellent
Very good course, presented in great condition. Especially the greens which were superb. There are some very long par 4's and 3's which present a real challenge. The staff were very friendly and the ChristmaslLunch was magnificent.Reviewer Rating

Slow play
Thetford is a pretty golf course with excellent greens and a nice clubhouse with good food BUT it is a four ball course so if you are a two ball beware - the booking system makes no differentiation. Yesterday we played behind a chronically slow 4 ball (we waited on every shot) who either had no idea of etiquette or were just bad mannered. In the end we skipped holes 9 and 10 to overtake them (They had 4 clear holes ahead) Having paid £120 this is not good enough. Had the system let us play in front of the 4 ball it would have been fine. Many courses have 4 balls in the afternoon and twos in the morning or vice versa. Maybe they can't be bothered as Thetford is always busy. Also it is a winter course, the fairways never get muddy which is great but the downside is that in dry weather they suffer and they are not allowed to irrigate. Yesterday all the fairways had been slitted which was no doubt necessary but not ideal to play on. £120 is a lot of money for two people to play especially as there are quite a few courses nearby (Swaffham for example) which are just as good and half the money.Reviewer Rating

Well worth a visit
Course layout/challenge Really good layout, and quite a challenge at almost 6700 yards off the yellow tees, and slope rating of 131Club and Facilities Clubhouse seemed a little on the small side, but had all the facilities we needed. This was a spur of the moment booking for a game of golf on our way home from the coast. There's quite a busy road that has to be crossed as it spllits the course into two groups of holes.
Value for money We paid £40 on a County Card rate, but it is normally £60 otherwise. I would put this at reasonable value.
Pace of play We played after 3.00pm on a Sunday, and the course was very quiet, so we got round in very good time, despite looking for the occasional wayward shot in the trees.
Friendliness and hospitality As we didn’t see any members out on the course, we could only judge from those in the clubhouse before we played, who all seemed quite friendly, and certainly the hospitality from the staff we dealt with was good.
Course conditions Tees, greens and bunkers were immaculate. Fairways left a little to be desired, in that they were quite patchy, and looked a little dry.
Practice facilities We only visited the putting and chipping greens, and did not investigate if there were other practice facilities, either in the way of nets or a range.
Food and drink We did not eat, but those who had played were eating, what looked like very good food. Did not investigate the cost of food.
Would you – Recommend Yes, happily.
Play again Yes, especially as this is very conveniently situated for us, being half way between home and the coast.

Pine lined and picture perfect
Lovely course which is incredible value as well as a solid test for good golfers. Plenty of tough par 4s but also some lovely par 3s including no 16 which could easily remind visitors of a more illustrious Surrey or Berkshire layout. A good Norfolk piece of hospitality always awaits too.(Round played: Jul 2020 - Score: 87 Handicap: 10.2)

Thetford is a heathland style course, although the day we played the course was burnt to a cinder by the long dry spell of weather – as a result all the fairways were firm and completely brown. The greens however were absolutely fine and would hold the well-struck approach shot. The course is long, around 6,700 yds, however this is largely compensated by the relatively generous fairways. If there’s one gripe of the course, it’s the fact it becomes a little monotonous with its length – we felt it would benefit from having a couple of shorter par 4’s in its layout to offer something a little different.
That aside it’s a lovely layout, a trail-style course winding its way through the wooded, heathland terrain. Only a couple of holes run up and down and that we think always makes for a more enjoyable and varied experience. It opens with a tricky mid-iron par 3, never an easy start and another par 3 at the 3rd. Thereafter, you dive into the guts of the course, which as said is notable for its length. The course finishes with an extremely tough, slightly uphill par 4 at around 460 yds !
Everyone at the course was very welcoming to the extent we were able to play as part of the Captains Charity day despite not being affiliated to the club. Overall, it’s a course we would like to visit again in less arid conditions – however, we’d recommend playing here if you have the opportunity to do so.
