What the club says: Originally designed by Willie Fernie in 1905 with later modifications by Herbert Fowler and Willie Park - and most recently by Donald Steel - Southerndown takes full advantage of its natural features.

There are many longer courses, but few with a finer set of par-threes. Equally memorable are the closing holes, usually played into the wind. The 18th in particular with its intimidating gorse and renowned split-level fairway will live long in the memory.

Challenging hilltop links with spectacular views

Southerndown is a unique and visually arresting links course that is tougher than the scorecard would have you believe. Accuracy is a must; all fairways are gorse-lined and your ball is gone if you are offline.

Well maintained, with an interesting layout and holes that change direction constantly. The only weak hole on the property is, in my view, the par-3 14th. Members are friendly and the food is good value for money. Sheep are in abundance here, as are breathtaking views.

The challenge of the course is more severe in strong winds, which are frequent given the course’s location. Better than nearby P&K, but not as good as Porthcawl; cheaper than both to play.

In my view, the hardest course of the three links (SGC, RPGC, P&K) in the area. Due to the frequent high winds and totally unforgiving rough, you need to be able to strike the ball both solidly and accurately to make a good score here.

Glorious Course high on the Downs

This was a beautiful course in excellent condition overlooking the Bristol Channel. Fairways and greens were in top condition, and we will definitely visit again.

Slow play

Dreadfully slow play. 3 1/2 hours for a two ball and my playing partner having to leave after 10 holes. Two 3 balls ahead who gave no thought of us waiting at every hole. Plenty of opportunity to pass but don’t think they even gave it a thought. One from each group left after 15 holes and they then joined to make a four ball and still didn’t call me through. Very poor etiquette.

Cliff-top venue. Great views.

First tee overlooks a long craggy coastline and beach. Very picturesque. Quite blustery and exposed - not for fair-weather golfers.
Great mixture of holes.
Sheep on some of the fairways, and even on a couple of greens.
Overall very good condition.
Friendly & welcoming.

A real gem of a course with views to die for

A tough track in good condition where poor shots are punished and good one mostly rewarded. The wind plays a big factor here. Stunning course and well worth the visit

A round with Lydia Hall

A fantastic opportunity to have a round with Lydia Hall, pro on the LET. What a lovely lady, and a superb if not challenging golf course. Very very windy which made it a challenge but not to Lydia so I guess it just goes to show the difference between my game to hers. Very warm welcome and friendly members. A great day had by all

Best course in the Bridgend arwea

Stunning heathland with a real link feel with tight lies and pot bunkers. Have played it few times over the years but right now it is in the best condition possible, given the environment and the odd sheep! Greens were true and a lovely pace, fairways lush after all the rains and stunning views. Great food, made to feel very welcome in the clubhouse.

This course has a great layout with awesome views and very true greens even if they were a bit slow. The fairways on the front nine are quite rough due to last years summer. This results in a lot of poor lies with the ball sitting in bare patches which are below the level of the grass. The amount of sheep s**t on the course starts to grate after a few holes but that was the only real negative.
