What the club says: Opened in 1976, Pinhal Golf Course weaves its way through a pine forest and also sports panoramic views over the sea. Originally designed by English architect Frank Pennink, the famous American architect, Robert Trent Jones, introduced several modifications in 1985. As a result, the first nine holes wind through umbrella pinewoods while the back nine, returning gently uphill, moves through terrain that opens up to those magnificent sea views
18 holes. Par 72. 6726 yards. Woodland.

Very playable and enjoyable, issues with the tees
This was our first experience of playing a Dom Pedro/Vilamora course and we were generally very pleased with the experience. The course is interesting and very playable; holes are narrow but heavily tree lined with the umbrella pines under which you can generally find your wayward shots and play a shot. There are subtle elevation changes and a nice level of variety in each hole, a few water hazards carefully placed. The fairways and greens were in good shape but the teeing areas were very poor. It is clear that the tees do not get moved around frequently enough. Another issue is that the yellow tees on the days that we played were actually at the blue tee distances for the first 4 holes. The colour-coding of the tees means that almost everyone plays from the yellows when actually most amateur men should play from the blues. I play off 1.4 and the whites would present too much challenge for a golf holiday even for me so I played the yellows. Two of my playing partners who play off around 20 and normally play one tee forward from me didn't feel they could because of the colour of those tees (silly I know). If they want the majority of very average golfers that were playing Pinhal to play from appropriate distanced tees they need to make the back tees black, the yellow tees white and the blue tees yellow. That would spread the playing load over more teeing areas and also speed up play. Golf in the Algarve is slow but the pace of play at Pinhal was atrocious. We played the last two holes in the dark. They also closed the bar on us when we were having our post-round drink.Reviewer Rating

Winter Golf at Dom Pedro
Pinhal is a good course, quite long and challenging. Facilities are really good, we played twilight a couple of days, first day was very quiet and we got round easily, second day was a different story, held up all the way, waiting on shots. To be fair you are told about pace of play so just be patient and enjoy the sun and surroundings. Not cheap to play and no real deals, cheaper on twilight. Would play again.(Round played: Feb 2022 - Score: 91 Handicap: 10.3)
