What the club says: Skillfully carved out of ancient Sussex heathland in 1904, Piltdown has to be one of most lovely golf courses in Sussex. With an investment of over £500,000 over the past few years redesigning and improving the greens Piltdown can now safely say it has some of the best greens in the area adding an extra dimension to an already challenging heather-lined 18 hole course. The new putting green for Spring 2019, a covered driving range and short game area all add to the excellent facilities available. Along with a very welcoming period clubhouse and superb catering Piltdown is an experience not to be missed.

Ranked No 43 in England
Not a long course, but great to look at, and very difficult if you can't keep it on the fairway, as the heather is very unforgiving. Fairways are good and the greens very smooth. No bunkers, but doesn't need them.Reviewer Rating

More heather than anywhere I've seen
A challenging but fun course, underrated & great value compared to its heathland cousins in Surrey. It has a Walton Heath vibe, quite flat, open and a bit wild. Take a fairway finder, some fairways are basically made islands by the heather!Reviewer Rating

Understated Delight
With its informal rustic seating on the lawn by the roadside, you could think you’re at a country inn, but this is a delightful place to play golf.I found this course easier than nearby Crowborough Beacon, being far less hilly and without the long carry from tees to reach fairways. No bunkers, although the undulating greens are the defence, with most surrounded by run off slopes, so good short game skills are needed.
Not a long course with five par-3 holes, which all play downhill, but a good variety in length of others, so I used every club in my bag. All very well maintained, with ongoing improvements to add to the investment that has clearly been made in recent years.
I really enjoyed playing here. Not local for me, but I was in Sussex for a few days so returned the next day to play again. Well, a former Club Pro stayed for 37 years....

CHARMING
A very enjoyable day on a beautiful course. My advice would be to make sure your short game is in good order before playing here, the undulating greens and surrounding slopes provide a thorough test.(Round played: May 2019 - Score: 87 Handicap: 13.2)

Hidden Gem ????
I played this course as part of the Sussex Heathland tour back in July which also includes Royal Ashdown and Crowborough. Unfortunately Piltdown is not comparable to the other two. The layout of the course was fairly interesting but nowhere as interesting or challenging as the other two. All three courses suffered from the very dry spell and therefore were dry and bouncy. This highlighted certain elements at Piltdown which weren't evident at the other two courses. Piltdown has been bold in investing a considerable amount of money on their greens which I am sure with time will reap benefits. However, it is noticeable due to the fairway conditions that Piltdown must suffer from poor drainage in the wetter weather. Furthermore, with dry bouncy fairways, the heather comes more into play for all levels of handicaps. Compared to the other two courses, the heather condition at Piltdown was very poor with all sorts of weeds, brambles and young tree shots in the heather. This was not seen at either Ashdown or Crowborough and can only be a result of poor attention to detail.I would certainly go back to Ashdown and Crowborough which were in my opinion "gems" but upon reflection I won't bother again with Piltdown.

Piltdown Golf Course
Tucked away near Uckfield in Sussex you will find this very pleasant golf course. Along with a lot of courses at this time of year it is very dry with brownish grass so be prepared for a lot of bounce and running balls. A good test for all ability golfers although long hitters will find it easier at the moment. A cosy and welcoming club house with good facilities.Reviewer Rating

A fantastic day of Golf!!
What a truly lovely course that I had the pleasure of playing recently with 3 friends for a 4 ball. We were lucky to have a clear day with the sun shining with our woolly hats on. We all found the course to be very testing and it does take some thinking for any level golfer as landing in the rough was something I became a pro of The fairways were immaculate and the greens were very well maintained and will challenge any level putter. We had the pleasure of seeing a few Deer on our round and the course itself is very picturesque. The Clubhouse is a piece history itself and very warm and welcoming with friendly staff who went out their way to make sure we all had a good day. Whatever the 1 star reviewer is on about I have no idea. There's always one who finds something to whinge about so take no notice and go to enjoy your day here! I Highly recommend Piltdown as a whole and we are already looking to return in the next couple of weeks for another great round. See you all again soon.Reviewer Rating
