What the club says: This traditional Members Club was founded in the early 1960's by five local businessmen who were keen to see a golf club in the City.
Having acquired the site of an old prisoner of war camp and bought some available fields, a nine hole course was opened in April 1961.
This facility was enlarged to 18 holes in 1973 and the opening of the course on the 4th July 1973 saw a famous challenge match between the then "Open Champion" Lee Trevino and top South African professional Hugh Baiocchi. Lee Trevino won the match with a score of 66 against a 67 by Baiocchi.
With the growth of the many trees on the course and the compact nature of the layout, the course demands straight driving and accurate iron play.

Challenging
Course in good condition, greens had a good roll. Challenging first 7/8 holes due to the tightness and you get punished by wayward shots into trees. Back 9 a little more open to the eye but more elevation changes that expected.Clubhouse welcoming and friendly staff

I visit my golf friends in Ely once a year and always look forward to a round of golf at the Ely City golf club. Unfortunately, the course has degraded massively in just one year. It is more like a municipal golf course.Tee boxes are dreadful, worn footpaths come to mind. The fairways are hard and have many bare patches everywhere, the bunker mounds are also covered with bare patches, the ponds are more reminiscent to cesspits. This was such a disappointing day!
This once stunning course has obviously got issues, they definitely need a lot of help in getting the fundamentals sorted, extremely sad, I won’t be returning!

Challenging but goregous
You'll be hard pressed the find a better course in Cambridgeshire. It's challenging and rewarding some long, narrow holes that really punish wayward shots but rewards accuracy off the tee. Some great holes such as the 2nd Par 3 which is a roughly 110 yard carry over water that sets up beautifully. Overall its enjoyable by all abilities and should provide a good time throughout.Reviewer Rating
