What the club says: Set in a very attractive woodland area in the North Yorkshire District of Selby, Drax Golf Club is a real hidden gem!

The layout of the course makes it manageable for a beginner, ideal for the casual golfer, but still offers a difficult challenge even for the more skilful players because of its narrow fairways, variety of trees, hazards and testing greens which are renowned in the Yorkshire area.

Great Little Course - Hidden away

This is a beautifully maintained course which offers challenges for all levels of golfer. Fairways and Greens are in excellent condition. There is so much care taken with the course which makes me believe they have a wonderful team of Greenkeepers.
Excellent value for money, they welcome all visitors , you can practice your short game and putting and you can enjoy food and drink in the Social Club after the game so, all round you can enjoy an excellent golf day

A remarkable surprise

When someone mentions the word "Drax", a golf club probably isn't the first thing most think of. Nestled in the shadow of a major UK power station, Drax Golf Club really lives up to it's nickname as "Yorkshire's Hidden Gem".

The course is meticulously maintained by a small team of greenkeepers and volunteers who clearly love their golf course. The greens as are close to USGA as you could get without the actual foundations to use the name. Some would even say 'perfect', even the flattest greens take a good read to get the right putt.

It's evident the club are investing wisely in their future with new drainage added to holes 2, 6 and 7 in recent years.

This is clearly a club going from strength to strength and a must play in the Yorkshire region.

We took our golf society to Drax last Sunday what a fantastic course it certainly does live up to the name of Yorkshires hidden gem.
When we arrived at the social club car park to be met by Alan he took time to explain everything to us and was also there to meet us at the first tee to explain everything about the course .
Kevin who I had been in contact with throughout our booking was away on holiday but took the time to ring Alan and make sure everything was perfect on the day .
The course is an absolute credit to everyone involved Volunteers, Members and greenkeepers.

Exactly what golf should be

As an experienced golfer I can say that this course is very well maintained, an excellent routing with fun and memorable golf holes. However, I was compelled to leave this review because of the fantastic attitude of the staff at Drax (specifically Kevin Harrison). I played this course with my girlfriend for her first time on a golf course. Upon arrival I’ve never felt so welcomed at a golf club. Kevin introduced himself to me and my girlfriend, figured out the best way for us to get onto the course with as little pressure as possible (not easy given a club competition was going on), and all in all made my girlfriend feel at home on the golf course. He came and checked in with us as he walked past after 4 or so holes to check that we were enjoying ourselves.

People like Kevin are exactly what golf needs right now to ensure that ladies feel welcomed into the golf world. Had my girlfriend had a different experience she may have walked away from the game, but instead she enjoyed herself thoroughly and is keen to play again.

Fairways terrible

Played at Drax in early Autumn after the hot summer and the greens were in fantastic condition but the fairways were terrible completely bald in several areas and very very patchy they had obviously been cut far too short during the drought and had basically died off bad

Course was a little challenging for me as I am a lady golfer and my drive seems to reach all the ditches so, lesson learned for next time. Really enjoyed playing though

Good Course, Bad Timing

First time trying the course and fairly new to golf, overall course is great if a little compact, the 18 is played over only 12/13 holes so you double over yourself a few times and it can be a little confusing which hole is next due to the layout. However the holes themselves are great, some down and uphill holes look great and really add to the challenge. We went at start of April and course could do with a few touch ups before the busy summer period i think, a few temp greens on some holes drag it down, with these temp greens not being maintained very well or of a suitable size, a bad end to some great holes. It says to check in at the bar before you start but we were told we didnt need to, instead walk to the course and have proof of purchase in case a course guide asks us.

Some Temp out of bound areas marked by wire construction fencing takes away from the look of some holes and the course overall, but i'd say in summer when hopefully all the greens are back in action, the other issues shouldnt be an issue, be sure to scout the course using apps and the guide beforehand as we needed it to find our way a few times. Will definitely be back but not straight away, it makes good use out of a small space for a good variety of courses, but the small space does bring its own issues. However for the price as (we got a hot deal of £20 in total for 2 people) cant really grumble too much.

Course plays well, however there tends to be some very ignorant folk playing - Zipping balls around you with no shout, dont bother ringing any bells, loud around the course/poor golfing etiquette. 3 out of the 4 times I have been sadly.

Enjoyed it again, friendly and quirky

Second time we've played here as a society and it is one of the friendliest courses in the area. Always enthusiastic and helpful people on site to start your day off nicely. Course was exactly the same with the same issues around playing some holes twice but it didn't really impact too much. The free drop GUR around makes some holes too easy and the greens were a bit uneven in places. Overall another enjoyable experience and we will return I am sure !

Nice course, could be better

We had been recommended to this course and as we were mid COVID rules, we thought we would try it. The staff there were so helpful and really welcoming. The course itself was really nice, but there is a large amount of GUR close to the fairways which is a free drop and makes it too easy on some holes as you can smash the ball anywhere and its a free drop. Some holes you play twice which resulted in some near misses as the different tee positions for the same hole arent necessarily looking at each other (if you are new the course). Having said that, some lovely holes and on a blazing hot day it suited our needs. Although I enjoyed it, I probably won't play it again.
