The Best New Hybrids - 2016

By: Golf Shake | Fri 26 Feb 2016

For those who don’t like using a long iron then a hybrid is usually the best alternative. The club offers the best of a fairway wood and an iron hence the name hybrid. Thankfully, here at Golfshake we have listed the best new arrivals to look out for in 2016 including the Callaway XR OS, The COBRA King F6, Mizuno JPX EZ, Nike Vapor Fly, PING G, TaylorMade M1, Titleist 816 H and Wilson FG Tour.

Callaway XR OS

Callaway XR OS

The XR OS hybrid by Callaway offers extreme forgiveness, high launch and when combined with the industry leading Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup you get ultimate distance. On top of this they also perfectly complement the XR OS irons.

The Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup redefines distance and ball speed in the hybrid category and enables ultimate distance on all impacts. The wider head design offers greater forgiveness and creates a higher MOI to increase distance. The hybrid is also higher launching and has a draw bias to help you turn the ball over. Finally, the keeled utility sole makes the club more versatile and will soon become your go to club.

Callaway XR OS specifications, pricing and availability

  • Loft: 19°, 22°, 25°, 28° (RH only) and 33° (RH only)
  • Shaft: Mitsubishi Fubuki AT Graphite (L, R and S flex)

COBRA King F6 Hybrid

COBRA KING F6

The Cobra King F6 hybrid is a traditionally shaped hybrid that is easy to hit, forgiving and accurate through. The hybrid delivers higher launch and improved forgiveness while still maintaining the accuracy of a long iron.

So what’s new in the King F6 hybrid? Well, the hybrid has rear CG weighting that means that the 13g weight is positioned lower and deeper in the head for improved forgiveness and extreme accuracy. The speed channel, which is a Cobra innovation, minimises thickness and increases ball speeds across the perimeter of the face for greater distance. Once again, the hybrid will come fitted with the MyFly Smartpad that offers up to eight easily adjustable loft options to maximise distance on any course through the fine tuning of the trajectory.

COBRA KING F6 specifications, pricing and availability

  • Loft: 16°/19° (2-3H), 19°/22° (3-4H), 22°/25° (4-5H)
  • Shaft: Matrix Red Tie HQ4. (R, S and XS flex)
  • Grip: Lamkin Rel 360.

Mizuno JPX EZ

Mizuno JPX EZ

Like the fairway woods, the Mizuno JPX EZ is recognizable by its larger, confidence-inspiring footprint and features a lot of the same technology found in the driver and fairway woods.

The innovative Shockwave Soles offers increased ball speeds as it enables the entire clubhead to contract and expand, offering an additional energy source on impact. This is also relates to higher ball speeds when you hit it off the turf as the additional mass lowers the club head’s centre of gravity. The larger footprint also inspires confidence and the reinforced waffle effect crown moves weight lower in the head for a softer ball flight.

Finally, the hybrid has been fitted with a quick fit adjustable hosel. This means you have the freedom 4 degrees of loft range as well as upright settings to optimize launch characteristics.

Mizuno JPX EZ specifications, pricing and availability

  • Loft: 16° (RH only), 19°, 22° and 25° (Ladies only available in 22° and 25°)
  • Shaft: Fujikura Orochi (R, S, L and A flex)
  • Fujikura Six (R, S and A Flex)
  • Grip: M-31 58 Round

Nike Vapor Fly Hybrid

Nike Vapor Fly Hybrid

The Nike Vapor Fly hybrid has been completely redesigned in 2016 to offer a refined, tour driven profile that maximises versatility and shot making. By working with Nike athletes such as Francesco Molinari has helped move this club forward and be more competitive on the market.

This hybrid possesses all the same technology as the driver and fairway woods so you will feel the consistency throughout the set. The Flightweight crown results in a lower centre of gravity and a higher MOI for a higher launch with less spin and more forgiveness. The head features a 30% reduction in crown weight from last years’ model. The HyperFlight face is thinned out around the perimeter to provide greater ball speeds across the entire face for extra distance on those off-centre hits. Finally, the re-engineered Compression Channel offers a springboard effect to amplify the performance of off-centred hits.

Nike Vapor Fly Hybrid specifications, pricing and availability

  • Loft: 17°, 20°, 23° and 26°
  • Shaft: Mitsubishi Tensei CK Blue 80H or Mitsubishi Diamana S+ Blue Board 80H (R and S flex)

The club face also has variable thickness so if you do manage to miss the sweet spot, you won’t lose too much distance. The centre of gravity has also been moved lower to promote a higher, more penetrating launch

Finally, the Quick Tune System that the club possesses gives every golfer the opportunity to quickly and simply adjust the loft, lie, face angle and centre of gravity setting using a 12-way hosel. The weight port comes standard with 7 and 3-gram weights as well as an addition 11-gram weight for ultimate adjustability.

Titleist 816H

Titleist released two hybrids late in 2015 ready for the 2016 season called the 816H1 and 816H2. Both posses the latest golf club technology with the 816H1 being a high launching hybrid that flies farther and lands softer and the 816H2 is a more compact hybrid with iron like control with greater distance.

Both 816 hybrids offer a relieved leading edge and an Active Recoil Channel to help the club glide through the turf and to give a better strike with every shot. The Active Recoil Channel flexes at impact, often described as the springboard effect, to generate high speed and low spin for greater distance. The Ultra Thin Face and high MOI design help deliver speed across the face so them off centre hits will still travel almost as far. The 816 range also allows the ball to come in from a steeper angle on landing, just like an iron.

816H hybrids provide the most precise fit Titleist has ever offered with two models, loft choices every 2º and a new 1º SureFit Tour hosel for independent adjustment of loft and lie to provide Titleist’s most precise fit to date and fills in those gaps in your yardages.
