Jason Morris claims the Welsh Mid Amateur Stroke Play Championship

By: Golf Shake | Tue 23 Jun 2015

jason morrisThe Mid Amateur Golf Tour are pleased to announce that Jason Morris has won his first national Mid Amateur title at the Jack Nicklaus designed Machynys Peninsula GC in Llanelli, Wales.

Players gathered from all over the UK to play in this annual event from 11th to 12th June, all looking to claim the title and the WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking) points that go to the winner and also the equally valuable Mid Amateur Golf Tour Order of Merit points.

Morris fired a first round 67 (5 under) that put him 3 clear of Mark Reeve from Saffron Walden and 4 clear of England International Martin Young from Brockenhurst Manor. A solid second round of 71 (1 under) gave Jason a 4 shot lead over Reeve and 5 over Young going into the final round and he finished the final 18 holes in 2 under for an impressive 8 under total and a 4 shot victory over Reeve.

“I’m chuffed and a little surprised!” said Morris after the final round. “I’ve been hitting the ball OK now for weeks but my scores have been poor so I am glad I managed to string together some good rounds and hold off Mark and Martin.”

Morris picked up the new trophy and winners “cheque” and now moves on to the summer leg of the tour with courses such as Royal St Georges, Royal North Devon, Hankley Common, Sunningdale, Ashridge and Liphook on the horizon.

Final scores (Machynys Peninsula, Par 72)

  • Jason Morris  (Boughton GC)  208 (8 under)
  • Mark Reeve  (Saffron Walden) 212 (4 under)
  • Martin Young  (Brockenhurst)  213 (3 under)
  • Michael White  (West Wilts)  216 (Level)

“The tour is a great opportunity for players to compete at the best UK venues against the best Mid Amateurs in the country and I would encourage anybody to get involved.” Added Katie Bray, Operations Director for the tour.
