Reader Review: Mizuno JPX Ball
You may have noticed that Mizuno have made a departure from their usual product line-up in the past 2 years and have been producing a range of high quality balls to rival those right at the top of the game.
We recently got our hands on the new range of Mizuno balls which is made up of three models - The MP-s, MP-X and JPX. Given Mizuno's history of producing superb product, we couldn't wait to get out and give the new balls a go. Here is how we got on with the Mizuno JPX ball:
Mizuno JPX
What Mizuno say:
The ‘Dimple-Cluster’ design of the new JPX is a result of a 3 year study into the descent phase of ball flight.
In tandem with the Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Mizuno’s ball engineers found that by focusing on dimple performance in the ‘descent phase’, they could effectively extend airtime and overall distance. The smaller, micro-dimples within the JPX’s cluster pattern take effect at slower speeds – as the ball transitions to descent.
With the added dimension of descent performance – the JPX delivers increased yardage in a soft, responsive package.
“The Dimple-Clusters have little effect at higher ball speeds generated at impact. However as the ball peaks and slows, they start to take full effect. By stalling the descent phase just a fraction, we were able to increase the JPX’s overall airtime.” Masashi Tamakoshi – Head of Golf Ball Development.
- Dimple-cluster design: Micro-dimples activate in descent
- 512 Dimples: Added airtime through aerodynamic design
- 3 piece construction: Soft, responsive playability
Owen's Review (Golfsahke staffer) - +2 Hcp
A ball packed with heaps of new technology. With the swing speed I generate it was clear that this was not necessarily going to be the right ball from for me and I would more suited to MP-S or MP-X.
I did find they felt a little strange especially chipping into the green, however they performed! I did not see any loss in distance and if anything I gained a couple of yards. There was not a hugely noticeable loss of spin around the green. Definitely a ball worth considering - try them and see for yourself.

Almost felt a bit 'Clunky' off he club face but interestingly actually picked up a few extra yards when compared to my current ball. For me it just didn't feel right but the stats I picked up overall were quite impressive and not what I was expecting whilst hitting it.

The JPX is the really interesting ball. The clever folk at Mizuno have introduced a cluster of micro-dimples, which despite looking rather odd are actually there for a helpful reason! The dimples are designed to help keep the ball in the air for longer with golfers with slower ball speed. Should work well for me then?
The JPX was… a little unusual. Yes, it has oodles of technology to help players like me, but it just felt really odd to hit. It’s a tough one to describe. The feeling off the face was one i was not used to and having used on trackman it was clear that it was not reall helping me.

As you would expect from Mizuno, a great deal of research and study went into the production and development of the new JPX Ball. Having played them on a spring afternoon at a Scottish links course, I was certainly impressed by the results.
Despite the relatively cool temperature – the ball flew through the air in a pleasing manner. Given the conditions, it’s hard to know whether they added anything substantial onto my distance, but I did feel an unexpected sense of confidence as the round progressed – despite it being my first time playing in months. I believe that the ball contributed to that. It was fun to play with.
