Why Spring is Our Favourite Time of Year For Golf
Springtime is the most magical time of the year if you're a golfer. The Masters is on TV bringing inspiring images from Augusta National into your living room, the new season is here, the clocks have sprung forward, and the weather is improving, all of which offers a renewed sense of excitement and hope for the months ahead.
Acclaimed golf apparel brand TravisMathew is fully embracing that theme by unveiling its limited-edition Our Favourite Time of Year collection, which you can see showcased by rising American star Akshay Bhatia at the first major of the year.
Golfshake's Equipment Expert Ryan Rastall has also spent the week in Georgia clad in this striking clothing.

This wonderful and timely theme got us thinking about what makes this our favourite time of year. That was a question that we put to our Golfshake Ambassadors & Contributors and their responses should have you inspired to get out there and make this a golf season to remember.
Golfshake's Darren Ramowski explains the invigoration of springtime. "Love this time of year when the clocks change, meaning longer days and the pending arrival of the first major of the year which for me signals the start of the UK golf season. With everything springing to life and the notable improvements in golf course conditioning, it makes a much welcome arrival to a more enjoyable golf experience after the tough, cold and often wet winter months. It's great to be able to choose when you play golf without daylight time restrictions; early in the morning, during the day, or a later evening round, and who doesn't enjoy playing golf in a polo shirt again and not having to be bundled up in multiple layers!"
For our new writer Fin Tait, spring is about perfection. "I love spring golf because, well, what's not to love? After a long, dark and cold winter, or just every winter ever in the UK, spring brings such a relief of anticipation for perfect golf weather. Then you get the Masters and the late afternoon rounds after work, it's all perfect."
Mel Davies certainly agrees with that as he's ready for all that golf in spring entails. "I love spring as it signals the proper start to the golfing year, with lighter nights, more comps, more chances to play and the big one is you start to see the courses gearing up for the season ahead with the first proper cuts, etc. It’s great to be out there walking the course looking round and seeing nicely manicured fairways, surrounds and greens, plus the added bonus of those first smells of freshly cut grass. What’s not to like."
Springtime is a sensory feast if you're a golfer and those visuals are what inspires Matt Holbrook too. "STRIPES! The first sign of stripes, either on a fairway or when the greens have been cut, is always an exciting sign for golfers. Returning to the the par 3 grass tees is a bonus too. My club is one that uses mats on the par 3s during winter to protect the tee boxes. The first time you get to slowly poke a tee into the grass on a par 3 is something to get really excited about! Finally, spring is about medal golf. We have comps during the winter, but only stablefords. That first medal back means the season is getting started and good times are coming!"
The good times are certainly here - and that is exactly what Andy Picken feels as he relishes everything that spring can deliver.
"I love spring golf, especially when we are basking in the gorgeous weather we are currently enjoying. The courses literally spring back into life from their dormant doldrums of the winter period.
"The wildlife also seems to recognise the burgeoning grasses and rough and become more easily apparent.
"During play today in the midweek competition, I noticed two male pheasants resplendent with glorious plumage fighting over the affections of a small female who gazed at them disinterestedly.
"Watching with more interest was a buzzard, one of a breeding pair I have spotted, who have made their patch my club.
"After the mist had disappeared the course was doused in life giving sunshine. It was simply a joy to play.
"I have also booked my TV schedule to accommodate The Masters as this also heralds the start of my golf season in earnest. I gaze in wonder at the pristine perfection of Augusta National and make a mental note to thank the team of greenkeepers that operate at my course.
"Please give them some consideration and appreciation for without them we would have no game. Don’t put pressure on them to recreate the perfect playing surfaces that will be televised to billions during this week.
"Instead think of the challenges they face ensuring that our crazy climatic conditions will not allow for that level of perfection at this stage of the season. Accept that it may be a few weeks before your course is seen at its very best despite their very best efforts and support them.
"Today's round reinvigorated and enthused me to the point where I immediately booked in for a couple of rounds at the weekend.
"Spring golf is putting a spring back into my step."
We couldn't put it better than that. Spring is about the new golf season, it's about nature, it's about inspiration, it's quite simply Our Favourite Time of Year.
