First Look: TaylorMade RSi Irons
Senior writer Adam Smith got the chance to test out the new TaylorMade RSi irons this week at the home of European golf, Wentworth.
Five years worth of research and TaylorMade are ready to reveal their irons that they say are going to revolutionise the game golf and having tried them out, all I can say is I’d have them in my bag faster than I could say ‘mishits happen’.
Nearly a month to the day that the RSi 1 and RSi 2 irons go on general sale TaylorMade Golf had a worldwide launch with professionals and sports stars on hand at various venues to test the irons and explain the values and benefits at what the irons would give their game.
I was at Wentworth with Graeme Storm and England cricketer Kevin Pietersen who plays off 16 and we were also joined by TaylorMade Executive Vice President Sean Toulon who explained in detail why he thinks the RSi irons will be so successful.
To put into context why I think the irons are so good the average amateur golfer mishits a shot 76% of the time below centre or the sweet spot, 45% of mishits are towards the toe and 22% of mishits are more towards the heel.
Now what if I told you that those mishits wouldn’t have such an impact on your shots if you use these irons? The new Face Slot Technology provides greater consistency across the clubface giving you improved performance on mishits.
I tested out the RSi 1 and RSi 2 irons and personally I prefer the RSI 2’s because of the slimmer head and less offset look of the RSI 1’s. What I will say is the launch angle on both is incredible.
Trackman technology was on hand to present me with my numbers and I was finding that my mishits which were more toward the toe were flying the same distance than my standard 7-iron that I use now. Catching the RSi 2 out of the middle gave me 25 yards plus extra distance along with a high ball flight.
They look good and you don’t even notice the Face Slots on the face when stood over the ball and I certainly need to feel comfortable when I look down at my ball.
TaylorMade professionals have already tested out these irons and some are going to have them in their bag as early as next week. When the Tour Preferred versions become available next year TaylorMade expect the RSI series to be the most played on tour and they also expect results to show the impact of their research.
