Best new game improvement irons 2014

By: | Mon 06 Jan 2014

Manufacturers are always working hard to  push the bar higher when designing new  game improvement irons. 2014 has seen the launch of a series of most technologically advanced irons ever made including new models from Titleist, Callaway, COBRA and PING.

PING i25PING i25

The 17-4 stainless steel irons deliver forgiveness and distance with control to inspire confident shot making. In the progressive set design, the long irons are designed with head sizes and sole widths that deliver high trajectory and extreme forgiveness. The more compact mid and short irons have narrow soles and less offset for enhanced accuracy and scoring. Narrow face-stabilising bars in the long irons increase ball velocity for added distance and height while wider bars in the short irons produce a controlled, lower ball flight with softer feel. The careful design details in the club’s shape and set progression are captured with an inspiring foggy chrome finish. Tungsten weighting in the low toe increases forgiveness. A machined face and grooves deliver control and consistency.

  • Available 3-9, PW, UW, SW, LW
  • Stock steel shaft: PING CFS® (Soft R, R, S, X)
  • Stock graphite shaft: TFC 189i (Soft R, R, S)
  • RRP:  £90 per club w/steel shaft; £110 per club w/graphite shaft

COBRA BIO CellCobra Bio Cell

The BiO CELL Irons are driven by tungsten-fueled distance and forgiveness. Long and mid irons feature heavy tungsten in the heel and toe for more forgiveness. Short irons feature tungsten centered behind the hitting area for added distance and control.

The perimeter undercut makes the BiO CELL Irons the largest unsupported face of any COBRA Iron. This creates more face flex at impact for an increase in ball speed and extreme distance. New BiO CELLs combined with E9 Face technology enable more discretionary weight movement that creates a low CG and high MOI, providing more distance and extreme forgiveness.

The COBRA BiO CELL Iron Set (Steel MAP: £549) features a True Temper Dynalite 85 shaft shaft and is available in stiff and regular flex in 3-LW in RH models and 3-SW in LH models. The BiO CELL Irons feature a Lamkin – R.E.L. 3GEN grip. Graphite irons are available through custom order and feature a COBRA BiO CELL shaft in stiff, regular or lite flexes.

Titleist AP1Titleist AP1

Titleist have announced the launch of the new AP1 and AP2 (714 Series) irons. The new irons feature precise, progressive designs which have been developed by the Titleist Golf Clubs R&D team to produce optimum launch, trajectory and distance by loft.

A new advancement in design sees an CG height progression, precisely designed into both models, this creates higher launching long irons and flatter launching short irons for more carry distance with in turn produces more control to help players stop the ball on the green, closer to the hole

The new Titleist AP1 and AP2 (714 Series) irons will be available in golf shops across Europe beginning November 8th 2013. AP1 irons have a SRP £93 (steel shaft) and £107 per club (graphite). AP2 irons have a SRP £114 (steel) and £130 (graphite) per club

Callaway X2 Hot

The  X2 Hot Irons have a new Deep Central Undercut that increases the face compliance to boost ball speeds and – you Callaway X2Hotguessed it – distance. A stabilising arch optimises the stiffness distribution across the face for a great sound and feel, while moving the hot spot lower on the face (and therefore more in line with a player’s impact location). Distance and ball speed are a huge part of the X2 Hot Iron, but Callaway have gone further with design that incorporates high MOI along with a repositioned centre of gravity and improved turf interactio. This has helped improve the downrange consistency by as much as 40%, easily making these the most accurate long distance irons Callaway has ever designed.

The Pro model, with a thinner face and a uniquely designed stabilising arch that moves the weight low and central - retains high ball speeds and distance advantages, but without an undercut cavity and in a compact shape that is more appealing to discerning players. The X2 Hot Pro Iron is further differentiated through a greater progression in offset and CG height, which helps retain some forgiveness in the longer irons while making the short irons more controllable and more appealing to the eyes for better players.

In the Standard model, the stock steel shaft is a True Temper Speed Step 85 and the stock graphite shaft is a lighter-weight offering than has been offered before. In the Pro model, the standard steel shaft is the Project X 95 Flighted shaft.

The Callaway X2 Hot steel has a RRP of £549, the pro steel has a RRP of £629 and the graphite set has a RRP of £699.
