The Best Utility Irons of 2024

By: | Wed 02 Oct 2024

When you take a peek inside the bags of many of the world's most accomplished golfers, you'll often find a utility iron tucked away in there somewhere, but what exactly are these clubs and should you have one?

What Are Utility Irons?

Utility irons have been engineered to bridge the gap between your longest irons and woods, being ideally designed to be deployed in a variety of situations from the tee, fairway and rough. These irons are usually larger than regular irons and possess a wider sole in their construction, which creates a lower centre of gravity that encourages speed and distance.

Many golfers have hybrids to fill this spot, but if you're someone who likes to shape the ball, a utility iron could be the tool you've been waiting for.

Naturally, there are many superb options available this year, and Golfshake's Equipment Expert, Ryan Rastall has picked out a handful of clubs that he believes represent the best that you can choose from.

Should you be considering buying a utility iron, then here are some possibilities!

Srixon ZX MKII Utility

Srixon Utility Iron

If you're looking for the perfect substitute for your long irons, then the Srixon ZX Utility is for you. It offers power, control and forgiveness in a design reminiscent of a blade. MainFrame is a key technology here - which represents the variable thickness pattern of the grooves, channels and cavities that creates maximum face flex at impact for greater speed and enhanced distances. With a lower Centre of Gravity, the Srixon ZX features a wider sole, which aligned with minimal offset and an attractive look makes this an incredibly appealing iron.

TaylorMade Stealth UDI Driving Iron

TaylorMade Utility Iron

Marketed as the ultimate driving iron, Stealth UDI offers tremendous control and versatility, being able to offer forgiving long iron shots and those low launching stingers that will create power from the tee. This iron has been created with ball strikers in mind, but it does offer higher levels of forgiveness than what you would find in a regular long iron. The weight placement is located behind impact, meaning that the Centre of Gravity has been positioned to offer a lower ball flight with the requisite spin to allow golfers to shape their shots.

Callaway Apex UT '24 Golf Utility Iron

Callaway Utility Iron

Created with better golfers in mind, you can benefit from this versatile iron from Callaway, which boasts a 455 forged face cup that is engineered to provide fantastic distance with urethane microspheres giving this utility iron an appealing feel. Dynamic Sole Design is part of this design, helping the iron to move through the turf more efficiently, maintaining consistency across all shots. With a shallower face than previous releases, this iron encourages a higher launch.

Wilson Staff Model RB Utility Iron

Wilson Utility Iron

Featuring input from the likes of three-time major champion Padraig Harrington, Wilson has taken their utility iron to another level with the launch of the RB, which not only looks better than before, but the redistribution of weight towards the toe and sole delivers a mid-to-low Centre of Gravity that enhances forgiveness, playability and power. The hollow body construction has resulted in faster ball speeds and improved shot shaping, while the face showcases high strength C300 steel.

Titleist U505 Utility Iron

Titleist Utility Iron

Taking input from leading tour professionals, Titleist's U505 is an undeniably impressive utility iron. It features several key innovations, including denser D18 tungsten weights and a brazing process that is used in aerospace construction, which all comes together to reduce welding points on the design, with that saved weight reminiscent of what you see in the manufacturer's distance irons, meaning that the U505 offers striking levels of forgiveness. The U505 boasts a more stable chassis and a lower Centre of Gravity position to maintain speed and stability across all strikes. The single taper face enhances performance towards the heel, which allows for tighter distance dispersion, while a new precision CNC face milling process offers more controlled and consistent ball flights.
