Scottish Golf Course Becomes Latest to Announce Closure

By: | Wed 18 Sep 2024

Last week, it was The Hirsel Golf Club in the Borders that announced that it had filed for bankruptcy, but sadly another course in Scotland has closed its doors in the form of Torrance Park in Motherwell.

A statement, which has been displayed on the frontpage of the club website, reads: "For a significant period of time the Torrance Park Golf Club has been experiencing challenges to being able to run as a profitable business. Unfortunately, it has been loss making for a number of years and has reached a point where this cannot continue. We have therefore undertaken a review in relation to the sustainability of the club, to look at whether or not it is viable to continue operating into the future.

"As a result of this review, in which we looked at all possible options, we have identified that there is no alternative other than the closure of the club and as such the golf club and clubhouse will close with effect from 1st October 2024.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and former members for their support over the years."

Torrance Park Golf Club

Originally designed by the great Dave Thomas, Torrance Park was a full 18-hole layout for many years, before it was reduced to nine holes in 2023, with the introduction of what the club described as "two new very testing holes."

Reviews on Golfshake were submitted before those drastic changes, but they paint a picture of a challenging course that offered value for money.

Comments we received included: "Great course that is challenging, especially if you leave the fairways. Great layout with a good mix of holes. The front nine is tougher than the back nine. Very rewarding round of golf even if it can be very frustrating."

Unfortunately, golfers will no longer have the opportunity to test themselves on what was once a genuine Dave Thomas design.
