Rickie Fowler Player Profile And What's In The Bag
AN EMOTIONAL Rickie Fowler won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in dramatic style for his first success in more than four years.
The American birdied the final hole of regulation and the first hole of a three-man playoff. Fowler shot a final-round 68 to finish tied with Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa. Fowler’s birdie on the 18th hole was his first since the seventh hole.
“It’s hard to really put it all into words,” Fowler said afterward while holding his daughter Maya. “Obviously a lot of good stuff this year and been playing some really good golf, so I knew it was just a matter of time with how I’ve been playing. I’ve had a couple tough weekends where I had a chance. Winning is great but there is a lot more to life than that.”
Fowler, whose last win came at the 2019 WM Phoenix Open, started Sunday with the lead and made three birdies on his first seven holes. He hit his approach to the 72nd hole to 3 feet and made the putt before holing an 11-footer on the same green minutes later. This was Fowler’s eighth top-10 of the season - his most since 2017 - and came on the heels of four consecutive top-15 finishes.
He shared the 54-hole lead two weeks ago at the US Open after shooting a tournament-record 62 in the first round and shot a personal-record 60 in the third round of last week’s Travelers Championship.
Player Profile
Fowler was born in Murrieta, California on December 13, 1988. He was the world’s top-ranked amateur before turning professional in 2009.
He has won five times on the PGA Tour and twice on the DP World Tour and in 2016 reached number four in the world rankings.
His first victory came at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2012. He won the Players Championship in 2015 after an incredible burst of scoring on the closing holes, eventually beating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a playoff. He also won on the PGA Tour in 2017 and 2019. He won the Scottish Open in 2015 and the Abu Dhabi Championship in 2016.
But it was what he achieved in 2014 that was truly remarkable - he was tied fifth at The Masters, tied second at both the US Open and Open Championship and tied third at the US PGA. There have been 12 top-10 finishes in majors.
Inexplicably, he decided to change his golf swing and fell into a slump that saw him tumble down the world rankings. He finished 2022 ranked 103rd in the world, his worst ranking since 2009.
But 2022 saw him slowly return to form and ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic he had climbed back to 35th in the world and 17th in the FedEx Cup standings. He is now eighht in the FedEx Cup and 23rd in the world rankings.
He has represented the USA in the Ryder Cup four times and in the Presidents Cup on three occasions. From 2009 until 2019 his worst finish on the money list was 40th.
At the 2023 US Open he became only the third golfer to shoot a 62 in a major.
