Ruoning Yin Player Profile And What's In The Bag
Much of the focus had been on Ireland's Leona Maguire and American sensation Rose Zhang during the final round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at revered Baltusrol Golf Club, but it was the 20-year-old Chinese star Ruoning Yin who emerged at the summit following a dramatic Sunday in New Jeresy courtesy of a winning birdie on the 72nd hole.
That 15-footer on the closing par five was enough to see Yin edge out former US Women's Open champion Yuka Saso, ensuring that the golfer from Shanghai followed in the footsteps of trailblazing compatriot Shanshan Feng in claiming a major title for China.
"When I was on the 18th tee and I saw the leaderboard, and I know I have one-shot lead, but after the tee shot, I saw Yuka make an incredible birdie here, and I know I have to make birdie at this hole to win the championship. I'm glad I did it," said Yin. "Today, I didn't think too much. My goal was just no three-putts because the last couple days I made five bogeys, and four of them is made by three-putts. Today just no three-putts."
Player Profile
Born in Shanghai on 28 September 2002, Yin made fast progress after taking up golf as a ten-year-old, representing her country at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
Turning professional in 2020, Yin made a staggering impact on the China LPGA Tour, claiming three consecutive victories before turning her attention towards the United States in 2021.
Qualifying for the LPGA Tour last year, it was a comparatively slow start for Yin, but 2023 had been a breathrough campaign even before this past week, as she edged out Georgia Hall to win the DIO Implant LA Open in April.
But now she has achieved greatness in becoming a major champion - with the promise of more to come.
