Golfshake Members Describe Callaway Iron Fitting Experience

By: Golfshake Editor | Thu 03 Oct 2019

An ever increasing number of golfers are taking the opportunity to be fitted for their new clubs, which inspired us to learn more about the subject. To explore the process and its benefits, earlier this year we took three Golfshake members to experience a Custom Fitting Session with Callaway Golf, fitting them with a new set of irons that have been tailored to their specifications, overseen by Mike Clark at Callaway's European Fitting Centre.

That memorable day was back in April, where 17-handicapper Andy Hammond was matched with the new Callaway Apex, as was six-handicap golfer Ben Phillips, while 24-handicapper Kevin Hyatt was fitted with the Callaway Rogue. We captured each of their stories individually, discovering their thoughts on the fitting, the knowledge gained, and their early impressions.

Furthering that journey, eight weeks later, we met the guys at The Belfry to hear about their progress and how the new clubs were performing during the early months of the season.

But now, with summer in the rear view mirror, Andy, Ben and Kevin have shared their reflections on the differences that being custom fitted for a set of Callaway irons has made to their games.

Progress

Since putting his irons into play, Kevin has seen noticeable results. "My confidence has massively improved. I feel more comfortable when standing over my ball - this has helped me not only in terms of the quality of strike but also in the control of my ball as it has been going further and straighter. It's improved my play from 100 yards in immeasurably, as I'm now hitting more greens from that distance. Comparing my stats on Golfshake from March (pre fitting) and from April (post fitting), all areas have improved. I've included my stats from March (pre club fitting) and from August (post club fitting) below - all areas have improved."

"Consequently, I've knocked 1.2 shots off my handicap since beginning to play my Callaway irons."

Andy hasn't played much competitive golf due to a new arrival in the family, but he has been left impressed by what he's seen this season.

"I’ve had the Callaway Apex CF19 irons for about six months. I know the club will do everything I need it to as it has been fitted for my golf swing. The most noticeable changes are the extra distance I’ve gained. Also, it has shown up weaknesses in other areas of my game."

The Fitting Experience

Looking back at the fitting day, Ben was hugely taken by the experience. "TrackMan stats were interesting! Mike made the tweaks to make them optimum for me which is pretty cool. If you’re investing in new clubs, why wouldn’t you get the best possible thing for you and having them fitted properly is a no brainer."

Kevin echoed that sentiment. "It's well worth having the fitting, for all of the reasons stated above."

Andy said: "The fitting was superb. The level of detail Mike went into to find the right head and shaft combination for my swing was incredible. No stone left unturned.

"Anyone who wants to improve their golf should definitely look into custom fitting experience."

Well, there you have it. Hopefully that has provided some insight behind what you can expect from a fitting. Check out the previous articles and videos for a detailed understanding of the process and the journey that the guys have been on.
