Foot golf only
The greens are in credibly poor condition and it would appear the main focus here is foot golf. The greens are not suitable at all for regular golf. The course itself is fine, it just the greens that let it down. The course also has a driving range which looked like a decent facility.

I would like to comment on the last view above and feel quite sad that some people have nothing better to do than slag people/ places off, especially by a review and not face to face. I played at this course and appeciate that this course was open when others were not, so i was happy to play the course. I found the guy running the pro shop extremely helpful and knowledgeable and he was qualified in all aspects of the golfing world and his certificates were held there, which from the guys review above indicated that he didnt ( did he care to ask?) yes the course was a little tired, and needed a make over, but hey due to all the bad weather it must be hard not to play Wentworth every week, like the guy above!!!!! Just played this week and the greens/ fairways and rough has all been cut...Is anyone else open i ask myself lol?

I used to be a member at this club back in 2007 for a period of 4 years and it used to be a great club to play with good drainage some quality fairways and well manicured greens. So when my local course was flooded this weekend and desperate to get out and play a round of golf with my son and a friend of mine I went to teeofftimes and booked at St Cleres knowing that in the past the course would still be playable. This cost £20 at head! First thing that I noticed was the once well run, well stocked and clean pro shop was now a shabby looking cafe with hardly any golfing equipment for sale, it was a sad shadow of what it once was! the toilet facilities now consist of a single stall at the rear of the pro shop with no changing facilities at all. Onto the course! What was once a well kept and well manicured course is now a shambles! the fairways are hardly determinable from the rough and the deep rough would require a search team of at least fifty to locate your ball even if it just crept in from the rough/fairway (as I said hard to determine one from the other)! The greens are a disgrace! They are more akin to the surface of the moon than a regulation green and reminded me of a teenager with a serious bout of acne. To read the greens would need a degree in physics to determine the course of your ball once hit making them almost impossible to drop a ball into the cup (putting is my strongest element of my game but yesterday made me look like a chimp who had never seen a putter or even heard of the game of golf). Now onto the people playing a round out on the course! Ok let me say I am no snob but I expect a certain standard on the course (the usual trousers, golf shoes......... A SET OF CLUBS PER PLAYER!) but no St Cleres require none of these things anymore! One fourball in front of us were sharing 2 sets of clubs between the four of them and were wearing jeans and trainers (you can imagine the standard of their golf) and had no concept of the rules! This was beyond frustrating being stuck behind them (I encourage people to take up the game and perhaps this is now the course to cut your teeth but I will say if this is the first place you ever play golf you may be put off the game for life). Back to the club house............ what club house?? the once comfy pleasant old manor house that was once the club house is now closed but fear not!!! Yes you can have a beer in the transport cafe.... sorry not transport cafe, Pro shop!!! I appreciate that the weather has been bad beyond believe of late but St Cleres used to be immune to poor weather due to the profesional team of greens Keepers that used to maintain the course (in the good old days you would see at least 4 or 5 greens keepers maintaining the course all day everyday, sad to say I didnt spot a single member of staff on the course at all yesterday)! The staff have no interest in the club any longer and are nly interested in taking your money! The club pro................ if you can call him that? More like a bouncer from bas vegas than a pro golfer (I will have money he has no qualifications from any golfing body) was rude and unhelpful! When we complained about the state of the course he explained that the fairways had been cut two weeks ago and that the greens had been spiked about the same time! No wonder David who used to be the club pro left in September of last year I can only imagine he couldnt bare the embaressment that St Cleres has now become! To sum up.... DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY PLAYING THIS COURSE!!!!

Played this course for the first time today. Wasn't expecting it to be ' Wentworth ' for the price it cost me but I wasn't disappointed . Yes I agree the greens aren't the best I've played on but considering we are in November and the amount of rain we've had recently they were ok. As for the fairways they were cut and stripped up nicely. Having just read the previous review from ' Rodney' from what I could see of the staff on mowers they were doing all they could do considering the damp conditions. Makes me think why 'Rodney' keeps going back if it's as bad as he says. I know I'll definitely go back and play again. Will even try the 9 hole which looks good and for £6 it's cheaper than crazy golf at the seaside!

Ive played here a number of times and watched the course slowly deteriorate , staff should be working at the co-op preferably in an non-customer facing role , toilet cleaning duties possibly , £20 and 4 hours of my life wasted , i suppose if enough people play there ,the grass might get trodden down into something resembling fairways ,but only hand grenades will sort the greens out.

What a shame. We arrived on a groupon voucher offering excellent value unfortunately it quickly went down hill. The fairways were non existent and comparable with the rough on other venues. Venture into the actual rough and the ball is gone. Unfortunately the fairway is four foot wide in some place so be accurate. The crowning moment was when on the eighth a four ball all hit their t shots well to a dog leg left only to have crows who were watching pick up each ball and fly off. Low and behold I hit mine with fingers crossed and a crow hopped along picked it up and flew off. As I said its just a shame as the layout is good with some interesting holes and some real risk reward. Unfortunately by the end the reward was finishing and going home - such a shame!...

I obtained a Groupon voucher that allowed my brother and I the chance to play this course for the first time, at £4.50 each!!!! Given my nature, I immediately went in search of reviews and opinions, only to find nothing short of hatred for the course and staff. Well, I thought, for £4.50 it`ll have to be pretty bad not to enjoy ourselves. This course, clearly well developed, has enormous potential. By hole 4, both of us were commenting about how lovely the design and feel of the place was. Challenging, not too long and really pretty in places. We both agreed that it felt like something wasn`t quite right though, and this was borne out by the conversation we had with the relatively new club manager when we finished. Overall, we were very happy with the day, but the place does need some work. Some of the greens were a bit shabby, a couple of the fairways weren`t particularly well kept and the greens looked a little forlorn with the occasional "mole hole", different colour/grass type grass and it left us feeling as though things weren`t all they seemed. We discovered the reasons for this when we finished our round. We were greeted by the new course manager who had been there for approximately 5 weeks and he detailed a selection of genuine reasons why the course had a \"could do better\" feel about it. It all boiled down to quality of previous management and current staff. The course has been somewhat neglected over the last year or more and the new management are trying very hard to bring the place back to former levels of condition and it sounds like the more of the old-guard he manages to get rid of, the better. I have no doubt that next year, this place will be a fine afternoon`s entertainment and I wish them all the best as it really is a lovely setting. I shall be returning over the winter to see how the development is progressing as I`ll be looking to take a society there next year. I`m sure the place, given how it is now being run, will end up being really rather good indeed. For the record, I shot 84, 41 out, 43 back.

This is a nice course that is unfortunately let down by poorly maintained greens. A number of the greens have large patches of dead grass on them so are essentially brown. I can understand this given the exceptionally hot weather we have had recently, however what I can't understand is the irregular length of the grass. It was like putting on a fairway on some greens where as other greens were absolutely fine. The inconsistency made it very hard to adapt to the conditions.
This aside, the rest of the course was fine. It is quite a narrow course with very long rough so I would not recommend it to anyone that is a bit erratic off the tee!

Played this course 3 times now - lovely looking course with some challenging holes and some tempting holes to drive the green on some shorter par 4s 1st and 18th come to mind.
Fairways are fair but playing partner and I both lost balls on the fairway so how?
Greens are not the greatest but better that a lot of other pay to play, but some look like a helicoper has landed on with the amount of holes and dents and torn up turf, and another has a lovely water feature on the back part of the green where it looks like there are breeding frogs.
It is a fair course, which could be made better with some attention being paid to it.
Course could be very good if attention paid to it, pro shop on the other hand just requires an overhaul of staff who actually do their job.
I was waiting for 10minutes in the pro shop to pay for my round, looked in the back of the shop to find someone, no one about, and only upon walking out of the shop, does someone say do you need some help, as the elderly gentleman was too interested in talking to someone he knew around the corner in the carpark than booking people in for their teetimes.
Going into the clib house is the same thing, one member of staff to run everything felt sorry for her, but again massive attitude problem it was a massive chore for when asking for a drink or food, it was as if I asked her to turn coal into diamonds using nothing but her hands.
I will play the course again as I like the lay out of the holes and it does force you to play straight or otherwise its good bye ball and a few drivable par 4s if you are a long hitter and a couple of holes in which you have to lay up to be able to attack the hole which I like compared to other courses whcih for me are get the big stick out and let it fly on every hole without any thinking or positioning required.
