Not strong on amenities, but a well-maintained course that demands good decision-making and accurate ball placement. For example, the first hole, 496 Par 5, features a long tree-lined fairway. The green, slippery and small, sits atop a steep hill (more than 50 degree incline). At the base of the hill is a creek and service road, behind the green is about 30' of rough and then a stand of ball-eating pine trees. The average golfer's best drive lands 225-250 yards short of the green. Landing the second shot on the green would be a stiff challenge for a pro and is all but impossible for an amateur. So, laying up is a must. But you're hitting down hill toward the creek. Club selection and ball placement are crucial to set up a reasonable approach shot. Say you land short of the creek on flat land with about 100 yds. to the pin. You will be hitting a blind shot to the green up that steep hill. The green is tilted toward the creek so a short shot slides off the green and has the potential of rolling down into the heavy rough and very tough footing. A long shot is likely going to be into the pines behind the green. Only an excellent lob wedge can hit the center and hold the green. Then the put will definitely have movement. A 20' side-hill putt can move up to two feet downhill. With many dog-legs, uphill greens, trees and streams, Yankee Run is a good test for ball control--but it is fair. Big-hitters have a chance to beat par on the longer holes if they can string together a long drive, a solid second shot, and a good putt.
