What the club says: Golf & Country Club Castello di Spessa
Swing amidst Collio’s vineyards, in the Mitteleuropean Golf Club
The Golf Club of Central Europe. Its strategic location, in Friuli Venezia Giulia and adjacent to Slovenia and Austria, allows the Golf & Country Club Castello di Spessa in Capriva del Friuli (Go) to breathe Central European air and spirits: as a matter of fact, the Golf Club represents a gathering point for Italian, Austrian, German, Slovenian and Croatian golfers, who meet and challenge each other in here, attracted by the charm of the place and by the mild climate, which is ideal for playing also in the coldest seasons. The languages spoken in this site are Central European too: Italian, German, Slovenian, which of course go hand in hand with English.
It was 2004 when architect Giacomo Cabrini conceived the golf course winding structure, designed in the heart of the Collio’s hills, well renowned for their excellent wines. It is indeed along the vineyards themselves that the 18 golf course holes wind. Several settings, which differ from one other also in the modelling of the fairways and in the extremely various structure of the holes, which are never alike. It’s a demanding course for first-class players, as well as enjoyable and not too hard for top-class ones.
At the top of the hill the golf course is dominated by the elegant silhouette of the Castle of Spessa, which is plunged in the greenery of its secular park and which gave its name to the golf course itself. Being associated to noble lineage and fearless guests such as Giacomo Casanova, the manor house – whose origins date back to 1200 – avails itself of 15 elegant suites furnished with tasteful pieces from the Italian and Central European 18th and 19th century, and in its womb, the oldest and most spectacular cellar in the Collio, where the prestigious wines of the wine yard are aged. From the restoration of an old farmstead at the foot of the manor house our guests today may access the Tavernetta al Castello, with its excellent Restaurant Gourmand and 10 rooms of country-chic atmosphere. The Club House is located in an old country cottage, furnished with a wide dehors and a shady terrace overlooking the garden and the golf course: the kitchen of its restaurant, the Hosteria del Castello (also accessible to non-golfers), follows the turn of seasons and celebrates the flavours of the territory, by offering a selection of Friulian disches. To complete the Resort, the farmhouse La Boatina, offering 5 rooms B&B, and the little restaurant La saletta del gusto, an ideal location for informal and appetizing dinners.
Golf Clinic
More than welcome piece of news for 2011 is represented by our Golf Clinics, covering 3 or more days, which are organized with interesting all inclusive packages.
History of the golf course
In 2004, upon supervision of golf architect Giacomo Cabrini, a large part of the Castle of Spessa’s park and surrounding areas were drained, in order to create an 18-hole golf course. Works went on for two years and in September 2005 the Circle Golf & Country Club Castello di Spessa was founded. The pre-existing structure was redesigned in 2010 by implementing the course of two new relevant holes and thus upgrading the golf course par from 70 to 71, besides extending its length. The creation of putting and pitching greens next to the driving range completed the Academy Area and made for the plug completing the whole work.
Not only golf
From the Castle of Spessa one may set out for relaxing strolls along the Collio’s slopes on foot, riding a mountain bike or a yellow Vespa, put at the disposal of the Resort’s guests. It’s a land of fabulous wines, outstanding cellars, excellent restaurants and inns, where our guests may enjoy both food and wines of supreme quality. It is also a land of hospitality and friendship, intertwined with the Slovenian town of Brda, a land of little art and history treasures, of wild nature. In the surrounding areas, our guests may visit the so called “Nice of Austria”, Gorizia, with its medieval castle; Cividale, Longobard town; Aquileia, also named “Second Rome” , which stands for the main archaeological site of the whole North of Italy; Grado, with its long beach and its enchanting lagoon. Moreover – from Gorizia, to Redipuglia or to the Carso high plain - one may follow the historical trails of the World Wars, looking for trenches, bunkers and places that were theatre of operations during the First World War.

Nice course wonderful landscape
The front 9 are wonderful, with two tee shots over the vineyards. The back 9 are less interesting. Very good facilities (food, wine, landscape).(Round played: Mar 2019 - Score: 107 Handicap: 38.3)
