What the club says: Stockport Golf Course is just under 6,400 yards in length with a par of 71. The course might, seem to be on the short side for the modern game, yet it has proved robust enough to withstand the onslaughts of powerful fields of professionals and amateurs in five Open Championship Regional Qualifying Tournaments.

Best in Greater Manchester
Unbelievably well presented with fantastic greens for November that were rubbing true and pretty fast. This course is in Manchester, it gets a lot of rain, but the efforts of the greens team is mesmerising with really fantastic greens, great fairways & well managed rough - hardly any really wet areas unlike so many inland courses are facing.A really strong layout with a great variety of interesting holes which challenges all areas of your game. Very playable and rewards good strategic play….looking forward to playing again as I can’t stop thinking how I might tackle a few holes differently next time.

Astonishing!
Played 6th March after one of the wettest February?s on record and can only describe the course conditions as perfect. The fairways and especially the greens just defied the laws of nature, it was just beyond belief how they could be so good and fast whilst still superbly receptive. I've no idea how the greens staff have achieved what they have but need applauding for it. Also thank you for the warm welcome for breakfast in the clubhouse. 10 out of 10 golfing experience in every way.Reviewer Rating

Superb Open Competition
Played the course for the first time at the mixed pairs open on Sunday 5th September. On arriving at the club, the staff were very welcoming and friendly. In particular, I would like to mention that Dan Featherstone in the pro shop was very helpful. I am still fairly new to golf however Dan was more than happy to spend time providing us with a brief overview of the course and then point us in the right direction when booking in etc. The pro shop is also very well stocked with a range of clothes and equipment to suit all tastes. The food in the clubhouse was excellent and the locker rooms are very clean and spacious. The course itself was in excellent condition and it was nice to see the half way house open. The fairways were mown well in the right areas and the greens ran true to form. We will definitely be returning.Reviewer Rating

Millionaires Golf
From the start when we met the Pro we were made to feel like members for the day. Gary was very welcoming and sorted us out with everything we needed...1st impressions were excellent, and the pro shop is really good.We headed through the pines to the 1st tee nervous about the tough opening, but feeling that we were about to start an exciting journey. From the off, the course demands your attention. A tough par 4 where a 5 feels good enough is a great opening hole where a wide landing zone beyond the dipping fairway is laid out before the hole sweeps through trees away to the right, but beware of the cavernous ditch on the right and the well placed bunkers positioned further down on the left. This hole sets the tone, you are presented with strategic options on every hole but will never be unfairly punished....it’s a really engaging, fun and enjoyable experience, where you can choose to be aggressive and chance a net birdie on most holes, or play cautiously and stay around par....get it wrong though and the clever run offs and large greens with subtle borrows and some challenging pin spots available will really test you’re short game skills.
The opening 4 holes demand respect, and getting through these unscathed offers the chance to breath easy on the short par 3 5th....until you realise that despite its length you need to make sure you hit the dance floor and avoid the clever bunkering and swales that again put a bogey well in reach.
The 6th is an ‘easyish’ par 5 with a genuine birdie or eagle chance...but as my partner found out an 8 is also well in grasp if you misplace your long approach as out of bounds creeps in around the green.
The 7th is a fantastic short par 4....is it a driver at the green or an iron for safety...you decide....but new bunkers look fantastic and again what on paper looks like an easy birdie opportunity can quickly be a double bogey or worse if you overestimate your skill.
The 8th is one of the signature holes, a longer par 3 slightly downhill with OOB right and long....a huge green that falls downhill presents a great putting challenge even if you hit the green...I was told after that a 4 is a very respectable score here.
Another birdie opportunity on another par 5 completes the front 9, before a chance to stop at the halfway house where you can grab a delicious bacon sandwich and a pint on draught, or whatever takes your fancy...fantastic friendly service.
The back 9 opens with a strong par 4, then a slightly uphill 165yard par 3 to a mckenzie green, before another birdie chance on a dogleg par 5 where you can try to carry the green and face a shorter approach into a wel bunkered green, or play wide and use your 3rd shot from 100yards to get close.
As you go into the back 6, there are some real gems. The 13th is another well photographed signature hole, a great par 4 with a fall and rise before the green...then onto the 14th which I’m told is again probably the true signature hole for members, a fantastic par 4 that sweeps down up and down and around to the right....a fantastic driving hole, and a wonderful hole to play a 2nd shot into from the top of the rise....a genuine Augusta moment feeling.
The 15th is a straightforward but challenging par 4 into the wind, and the vast green demands attention. 16 is a fantastic par 3 back to the clubhouse, 17th is again another beautiful hole that could also be a signature hole, a shortish par 4 with a real risk:reward effort and towering pines either side of a strategically bunkered fairway - pull out the driver and blast over them? Or iron for safety? The 18th is another par 4, and the walk up towards the beautiful clubhouse gave time to take in the round and surroundings and to really relish the day so far, thinking back about the strategic choices made and how I might try something different next time....we I will be back.
We finished the round with a meal in the clubhouse and I have to say that this was absolutely superb. The staff are brilliant. Friendly but professional, and a real understanding of standards and service. Hats off to the chef as well....if you come and play then I have to recommend that you visit the clubhouse and have some food afterwards, you won’t be disappointed!

Nice enough but not exceptional.
I played Stockport a couple of times during the winter of 2019/20 and was surprised by how wet the fairways were. Boggy, in fact. The greens were also soft to the point of being unplayable. Clearly drainage, thatch, and compaction are major problems at Stockport, which is surprising for a club which fancies itself among the elite in the area. The layout is pleasant enough, with a few good holes. None are particularly memorable however, a point proven by the club nominating the par 3 8th as their signature hole. In truth it’s a decent enough half blind long par 3 with OOB right and back with intrusive trees blocking the right hand pin. Not exactly the stuff to get the pulse racing.
I returned to Stockport for a game in July and was astounded that while the fairways were okay the greens were still like puddings. What is going on? Or rather not going on!

The reviews are right!
Played 16/6 for the first time @ Stockport. Very impressed. Course in great condition, well bunkered (& the majority do come into play), greens good and true. The course is quite open, so gives you a chance, but stray from the fairways/catch the sand and the course bites back. At ?65 it's not cheap, but as non members playing on a Sunday morning, having the place to ourselves, we couldn't grumble!Reviewer Rating
