What the club says: The venue boasts two, quality 18 hole golf courses with challenges suitable to golfers of all abilities. The Thonock Course is a traditional parkland course, whilst Karsten Lakes is an American style layout with numerous large bunkers and lakes to catch those wayward drives. The venue provides an excellent opportunity to play 36 holes on two contrasting styles of course. Both Courses have an excellent reputation for the quality of presentation, in particular the quality of the greens which are playable all year round due to the excellent drainage infrastructure and ongoing maintenance practices.

Park Course
It might be a little harsh to criticize any golf course if you have only played a 9-hole round, which was the case for us. Despite the recent rainfall, the underfoot conditions were pretty good although the grass covering on some fairways was quite bare on some holes. Having said that the greens were quite reasonable for this time of year. We did find it hard to understand the high slope rating of the course as the fairways were quite welcoming due to their lack of hazards. This enabled us all to score well which always helps to make it an enjoyable visit.Reviewer Rating

Such a superb venue, when its on it !
I personally think Gainsbrough GC is one of the best golfing venues in my area, fantastic clubhouse and set up, two lovely courses and a great range and pro shop etc. However from late 2019 through to now (April 2021) there had been some issues with the Karsten Lakes course and how it was being looked after. Even their own members had raised concerns and did not accept the excuses that it was recovering from improvements made in 2019. But, I am pleased to say that playing it yesterday, it is returning to its glamorous best (Karsten Lakes that is). It's still not there yet, but its getting there and will be amazing as it used to be. Challenging long drives, water, tricky greens and a great finishing run of holes. This is a course worth going to for the whole package as in my opinion you really can't beat it in the Doncaster area. Keep up the redevelopments there and it will be a course everyone will want to visit,Reviewer Rating

Now called Thonock Park not Gainsborough Golf Club
The club has recently changed its name from Gainsborough gold club to Thonock Park Golf Club and has had a full rebranding, and the Karsten Lakes course has had a full bunker review, with a lot removed, reshaped or relaid as they used to be poor and flood. Played Lakes on in October, roughly four weeks after greens had been hollow tined etc, however they had not recovered well and were in poor condition and very bobbly. Played the Thonock course two weeks ago and the greens had recovered far better, so was surprised to find the Lakes were so poor. The fairways on the lakes course were very soft, and the grass coverage on the fairways was quite sparse. Again, two weeks previous found the older more established Parks course to be in much better condition. The two courses are very different. Lakes is much more open, obviously water is a big feature, and the lay out is much improved for the bunker work that has been done and the bunkers were in great order to play from. The Parks course is much tighter, and less flat.A shame to find the Lakes course in poor condition, and would say it’s a much better course in summer. Played for £30 which included golf, bacon butty and a coffee and cheeseburger and chips afterwards, which was very good quality and value for money

Value but a bit poor for October
Firstly, my game was crap until the 11th in but for a 'Ping' owned facility the overall condition of the course was, I felt, poor for early October. Fairways were patchy and greens bobbly and uneven with odd exception. Add to this you appreciate course maintenance is a necessity and they should have priority but to be kept for 10 mins on a Tee for a par 3 was annoying as a following 2 & 3 ball were already waiting by the time we were able to hit.(Round played: Oct 2020 - Score: 109 Handicap: 22.7)
