What the club says: Donnington Valley Hotel and Spa, in Newbury, had its beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course re-designed and lengthened between 1998 and 2000 and is now a challenging 6221 yards, par 71 course from the back tees. Although some of the holes are quite forgiving the closing four holes are regarded as one of the toughest finishes in the country, with water featuring prominently on 15th, 16th and 17th holes.

Firm favourite
We have now played here quite a few times and love the variety of the front nine versus the back nine.Reviewer Rating

Nice course - good level of challenge
A really nice course. Very good condition and some narrow holes that add some challenge. Enjoy the holes with water too. Only two slight criticisms: I think ?48 is a little steep for the green fee. Also the play was slow - we were a 3 ball and it took 4hr40 to complete our round.Reviewer Rating

Over priced
£48 each for a 4 ball is massively over priced but it will be quite at those prices so that’s a plusReviewer Rating

5 hour plus weekend round
It’s a nice course but overcrowded at weekends. There was a society of 60 followed by one of 24 all in 4 balls with 8 min tee times. Waits on every tee and fairway. Three groups waiting on the par 3 11th. We gave up at 13 after 4 hrs. Also, there a lot of litter over the course. Our game on the Monday morning was completely different. As a 3 ball we were round easily in 4 hrs.The hotel is really good with excellent staff and good food.

Very busy and slow
Course was in good condition- especially the greens which were very fast despite heavy overnight rain.We played from 13:30 on Sunday afternoon. 3 groups. Course was very busy - maybe because the sun was shining after rain most of the morning. But it was VERY slow. Waiting on every hole. I gave up after 2.5 hours for 9 holes. The rest of the guys continued but I’d had enough by then
Course is unusual in that due to undulating layout there were hardly any greens you could see from the tees

Qwerky
Played this course twice in 2 days sep 3-4 2022.Weather had been dry of late so fairways were dry and hard.
Only 2 par 5s and 3 par 3s. A string of 7 par 4s from 2nd to 8th. 1st & 2nd good holes then we get some silly tight par 4s , lap of the gods if you get a good or bad bounce. You can easily be blocked by low branches and tricky to advance to ball back in play as the fairways are so slopey. The par 5s are good. 1st reachable in 2 as its all downhill. 15th a good par 5 you have to plot your way. 9th a good short par 3 with a very slopey green. other 2 par 3s are both with raised greens that you cant see, both very difficult. The condition of the fairways was good, greens also were good and fast. I would take about 9 or 10 holes from the 18 as good design but the rest not enjoyable. Will not be rushing back but worth a go if you live close.
