What the club says: The late Eddie Hackett created this monumental links course with as little disturbance as possible to the natural landscape in which it lies. Regarded as his greatest achievement alongside Waterville, a golf writer once described it as ?God?s own course.?

The dunes and the entire 27 holes are incredible, the hospitality second to none.

This obviously was a great course. But it lacks some care nowadays.

Easily my favourite course in the world, and I've played a few. Simply the most natural, dramatic links course anywhere. It's location means that it gets far fewer visitors than those in the south west and, as such, it is far less manicured which may not be to everybody's taste. Similarly, the club facilities, while adequate, may not be to the standards of some visiting groups. The course, however, is amazing. The back 9 is certainly stronger than the front although the 3rd, 5th and 8th are excellent par 4s. The 11th is a fantastic par 4, driving from a hugely elevated tee through a valley, before a sharp dogleg right to an elevated green hidden behind a dune of monstrous proportions. 12 and 13 are nice holes taking you out to the ocean before the par 3 14th played directly beside it. What follows is, I believe, the best finish in golf. The par 4 15th takes you on a careering rollercoaster ride along a fairway with undulations that you won't believe. The par 3 16th has a huge drop from tee to green and is delightful, if far tougher than it appears. The index 1 17th is a beast of a par 4 with a long drive required to an extremely small landing area with huge drop offs on either side. This is followed by a long iron/fairway wood approach to a green featuring trouble everywhere, including a terrifying 30 foot drop anywhere to the right. The 18th is another rollercoaster, dogleg par 5 with a huge valley in front of the green. Most other courses would have filled this valley in but, at Carne, it fits perfectly. The clubhouse and pro shop are extremely welcoming, and the pint is brilliant.

Easily the best course I've played. Huge dunes, unbelievable undulations and massive changes in elevation. It's links golf on steroids. Probably the friendliest clubhouse as well. If you love links golf, you simply have to come here.

A fantastic course in a superb location with beautiful views of the Western Seaboard of Ireland and the Atlantic roaring alongside. It is a tough course especially in windy and wet conditions. It has some superb and challenging holes but is endowed with really friendly and welcoming members. A long journey from Dublin but I can't wait to get back and play it again. What a course!!!!!
