Mr AS

Cardiff Golf Club offers a tight and tricky challenge for golfers of all skill levels. This par-70 course stretches over 5800 yds on the yellow, and demands precision, strategic thinking, and a well-rounded game.

From the moment you step onto the first tee, it becomes clear that Cardiff is no ordinary course. Some fairways are narrow, lined with mature trees that eagerly swallow wayward shots. Accuracy off the tee is crucial; even the slightest miscalculation can leave you with a challenging recovery shot. The rough is thick and penalizing, making it essential to keep the ball in play.

One of the most striking features of Cardiff GC is its undulating terrain. The elevation changes are frequent and significant, adding an extra layer of complexity to club selection and shot execution. The greens are small and well-guarded by bunkers, demanding precise approach shots. Once on the green, the fun is far from over. The putting surfaces are fast and undulating, requiring a delicate touch and keen reading ability.

The signature hole for me is , the par-5 4th, epitomizes the course?s character. A good drive will either will give you two options for the second shot for a positioned lay up or perilous attempt at the elevated green.

Cardiff GC back nine is particularly tricky for its dogleg fairways on 13th,15th and 17th holes. The 11th is also a 2nd shot choice of lay up or go for it in two on the par 5.
Course conditions are generally excellent, with well-maintained fairways and greens that roll true. However, given its challenging nature, Cardiff Golf Club is not for the faint of heart. Golfers seeking a relaxing round may find themselves frustrated by the course?s relentless demands.

In summary, Cardiff GC is a gem for those who relish a challenging and thought-provoking round of golf. Its tight fairways, strategic hazards, and good rolling greens make it a course that rewards careful planning and precise execution. If I had one moan it would be the clay based ground that seems to hold surface water, perhaps winter might be not so enjoyable.

The golf course itself is very nice and well laid out with tricky holes and narrow fairways. It was very enjoyable to play on. The only slight negative is its very wet underfoot in places, so the drainage is not the best, so I'd imagine it would be even worse after lots of heavy rain. Regardless of this, the layout of the course and the challenges it provides makes it a well worth course to try.

We played this course after a reasonably dry week. The first hole has a great vista as you hit from an elevated tee. The course has mature trees and a great layout. Unfortunately the course was very wet and as the rain got heavy the latter greens became flooded. I would thoroughly recommend this course but play it after a long dry spell.

My first visit in the middle of August 2014, and just missed the ideal time with a roll up going off the 1st, so allowed to play off the 11th instead - fantastic, had a wonderful clear round. One of Cardiffs premier clubs and still quite traditional with separate spike bar downstairs whilst main (members) bars etc upstairs, with a slightly off putting sign on door "Members & visitors bar" - slight feeling though of it being a members only bar! Standing on the 1st, you are immedately aware that this is not a typical flat parkland track with a lovely longish downhill par 4 with trees a plenty on both sides - first shot of the day, hmmm, overlooked by the clubhouse. Nice par 3 2nd leads to a downhill but tough long par 4 where too far right and you will be blocked out by a huge tree, oh and a stream crossing!. By now you will have realised that this is truly a "well tree lined course" and you have to be straight all the time, although saying that, more often than not, the fairways are generous. Only in the deepest woods is there uncontrolled rough, sides of fairways being very well managed and you shouldn't have any Lost ball problems. The 4th is a genuine par 5 with the smallish green cut out of the embankment to the right, and then to a lovely well protected par 3, short but dangerous. 6th is a good S/I one with a testing drive and a stream crossing diagonally, whilst 7 is also pretty narrow with the stream in play again. Then to the 8th, a continueing dog left left par 5, where for us non-cat 1 types is truthfully iron iron iron hope and putt.......jungle all the way tee to green on right. Good longer par 3 9th and then back to back par 5's, the second of which (11th), although downhill, has the added problem of a stream immediately in front of the green. The 12 is a straightforward par 3 although an unseen "pot pond" lies front left, so avoid!. 13 is a long par 4 curving right round the trees, and then to a short but very narrow par 4 14th - accuracy paramount here with another stream in front of the green whilst 15 is a tough long dog leg right par 4. Par 3 16th, dog leg 17 and then a fine finale, a short par 3 straight back up to the club house - real fun on a competition day with members hanging out and watching your every move. All in all, an excellent moderate walking tree lined course which was presented in absolute superb condition on my visit, the trees being some of the most stunning Ive seen on a course and all in all, very friendly, and all round, certainly a venue to visit if in the area
