Reader Review: GolfBuddy WT5
We sent out relatively new to golf Geoff E (28 handicap) on course to test the Golf Buddy WT5 GPS watch to see how he found the use of a GPS device and how the WT5 stacked up on course.
What GolfBuddy say
The GolfBuddy WT5 is their most slimmest, lightest and feature-packed model to date. The new GPS watch boasts some significant improvements on its best-selling predecessor, the WT3, and is slimmer, lighter and completely re-styled with a softer, more comfortable strap.
WT5 boasts Pin Placement Technology so the golfer can put the flag on any one of nine preset locations on the green (left, centre, right x front, middle, back) for added accuracy and over 37,000 free golf courses are preloaded. Dynamic Green View gives distances always directly from the golfer's angle of approach. Golfers can also measure their shot distance and see how far they've walked through a full GPS tracking system. And, of course, it can be worn off-course as a smart watch.

Reader Review - Geoff 28 handicap
Looks
Smart matt black, fairly thin, does not look big on wrist. Great to wear on and off the course.
Feel
Very light and comfortable on the wrist and about the size of a normal watch so doesn't distract in anyway and didn't stand out or distract my vision when addressing the ball. When I reviewed it was a mixed weather day so had to take my water proof jacket on and off a few times due to showers and had no problem pulling my jacket sleeve over.
Performance
Self tuning to course you are playing once you arrive which makes it easy for picking the course. It also knows where you are on the course and automatically advances holes.
The WT5 gives distances to front middle and back of greens, distances to front and back of hazards which I found particularly helpful and easy to use. During the testing I also checked distances against laser measured and found to be accurate.
Pros
Gives excellent accuracy and is quick and easy to use. Does not interfere with the rhythm of your game and literally takes seconds to check distances.
Cons
None came to light during testing.
The bottom line
This was the first time I had used a GPS device and it definitely aided me with my club selection and choice of shot.
After the first couple of holes I did not have to think how to use it, I just easily checked distances and scrolled to what feature I wanted to use. One particular shot I was 52yds from front of green, I practice a 50yd pitch shot on the range, so I took this shot and landed on the front of the green, which was very satisfying.
As a first time golf GPS user and high handicap golfer I found this was a great device for me. It definitely provided more confidence with knowing distances resulting in greater confidence with club and shot selection. It also helped in speeding up my pace of play.
