Mizuno 'cluster dimple' technology included in their 2nd generation ball

By: Golf Shake | Mon 16 Feb 2015

Mizuno has announced that it's second generation of golf balls will land in Europe during February 2015.  Accompanying the pro level MP-S and MP-X is Mizuno’s new ‘dimple-cluster’ concept ball, the JPX.

Working closely with the Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Mizuno’s research team identified that the ‘descent’ phase of ball flight was the least optimized by current dimple design.  By adding a cluster of micro-dimples around each larger one, the collaboration found that descent could be slowed down – effectively extending airtime and distance.

“The micro-dimples have little effect at higher ball speeds generated at impact.  However as the ball peaks and slows, they start to take effect.  By stalling the descent phase just a fraction, we were able to increase the JPX’s overall airtime.”  Masashi Tamakoshi – Head of Golf Ball Development.

The MP-S and MP-X balls continue Mizuno’s long standing relationship with the better player.  After months of seeding both prototypes, the manufacturer is confident that it is ready for the next stage in its evolution as a credible ball manufacturer.

“We’ve been testing the new MP-S and MP-X since late September,” commented Alex Thorne, Head of Tour Operations.  “This time round the younger elite players are more familiar with the Mizuno ball.  We already have some highly ranked amateurs with the new ball into play.  The golf ball is possibly the most sensitive piece of equipment in a better player’s bag – so it’s better to work with the players young and bring them through with our specific feel and technology.”

“We are also really excited that Chris Wood, our No1. European brand ambassador is now contracted to the MP-X ball for 2015.  There are also 5 players on the Japanese Tour committed for 2015.”

Mizuno JPX Ball

mizunoThe ‘Dimple-Cluster’ design of the new JPX is a result of a 3 year study into the descent phase of ball flight.

In tandem with the Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Mizuno’s ball engineers found that by focusing on dimple performance in the ‘descent phase’, they could effectively extend airtime and overall distance.  The smaller, micro-dimples within the JPX’s cluster pattern take effect at slower speeds – as the ball transitions to descent.

With the added dimension of descent performance – the JPX delivers increased yardage in a soft, responsive package.

“The Dimple-Clusters have little effect at higher ball speeds generated at impact.  However as the ball peaks and slows, they start to take full effect.  By stalling the descent phase just a fraction, we were able to increase the JPX’s overall airtime.”  Masashi Tamakoshi – Head of Golf Ball Development.

  • Dimple-cluster design:    Micro-dimples activate in descent
  • 512 Dimples:   Added airtime through aerodynamic design
  • 3 piece construction:     Soft, responsive playability

Mizuno MP-S

mizuno mpsDubbed ‘the ball that loves to spin’ on its introduction – the MP-S is Mizuno’s softest, most responsive ball.   The 2015 edition maintains that trait, whilst adding the dimension of increased long game distance.

The 2015 edition features a larger inner core and thinner urethane cover – adding yards to the long game of mid/high swing speeds.  The cover thickness is reduced to just 0.5mm, increasing velocity from the tee, while a 330 dimple configuration creates a highly efficient flight.

“The MP-S is a high feel golf ball that works great for mid to high swing speeds - we’ve matched this ball to players who like a little spin to help their ball flight,” said Alex Thorne, Head of Tour Operations.  It’s still very responsive around the greens, for guys who like the ball to check up.”

  • Refined Urethane Cover:  Reduced to 0.5mm thickness for increased initial velocity.
  • 330 Dimple pattern:  Configured for more stable ball flight.
  • 3 piece construction:  Adapted for high ball speeds and responsiveness.

Mizuno MP-X

mizuno-mpxMizuno has announced an MP-X ball to accompany the more responsive MP-S model for 2015.

The MP-X has been unveiled to help Mizuno expand its use amongst the next generation of tour players and elite amateurs.   The 4 piece construction features a dual core design, which reduces spin from the driver – suited to more powerful ball strikers.   A new, thinner 0.5mm urethane cover enhances initial ball speed, while a 330 dimple configuration creates a highly efficient flight.

Alex Thorne, European Head of Tour Operations, “For the majority of tour players and elite level players, we’ve found the low spin characteristics of the MP-X off the tee, make it more predictable in the long game.  Club players who generate a little less spin naturally, will match up better with the MP-S.”

  • Refined Urethane Cover:  Reduced to 0.5mm thickness for increased initial velocity.
  • 330 Dimple pattern:  Configured for more stable ball flight.
  • 4 piece construction:  Adapted for stability at high ball speeds.
