Belly Putters - Feature & Review
Belly Putters have been a much talked about part of the game in recent years and have come into particular focus following Keegan Bradley’s victory in the USPGA in 2011. This was the first major win by a player using a belly putter.
More and more pros are turning to the belly putter to help with their consistency on the greens and as result many amateurs are considering the belly putter as an option. Manufacturers are expanding their ranges as a result and improving the technology on offer, notably PING with its innovative adjustable Nome Belly Putter.
Golfshake have taken an unbiased look at some of the new and innovative Belly Putters to enter the market in 2012:
TaylorMade Golf Ghost Mantra Belly Putter
The new TaylorMade Ghost Mantra Belly Putter is eye catching with an all-white finish and is part of the successful TaylorMade Ghost family of putters. There are three weights placed in the sole, one on the toe, one on the heel as well as one set back in the head. These weights combine to create an incredibly stable putter and a high MOI.
There are dual black alignment aids on top of the head. These frame the ball at address. In addition a Pure Roll Surlyn face helps create a smooth and consistent roll.
The TaylorMade Ghost Mantra is available in both a centre shafted and standard heel shafted model.
PING Nome Adjustable belly putter
PING Golf has become the first company to create an R&A approved adjustable Belly Putter in the form of the PING Nome.
The Nome allows a player to adjust the putter by up to 9” to help create the perfect fit and optimize performance.
The PING Nome head is precision milled from a block of aluminium and is has a mallet head shape with a tungsten weights set into the sole. The sole weight helps to stabilise and create a high MOI. The shaft itself is made from steel in the lower portion and graphite in the upper portion which helps create an optimum balance. The Nome comes with a Winn split grip as standard.
Odyssey White Ice 2 Ball Belly Putter
The White Ice 2 Ball is Odyssey’s latest Belly Putter and features the hugely successful 2-Ball alignment aid that has made Odyssey putters a favourite with both the tour pros and club golfers. The Ice White has a dark nickel finish creating a classy look and helps with anti-glare.
The White Ice features a multi-layered insert which has been firmed by 19% compared to previous models, this helps with distance control and constitency of strike off the face.
A steel double bend shaft and Winn full length belly putter grip are fitted as standard.
Nike Golf Method Core Drone Belly Putter
Nike Method putters have gained great reputation after multiple major wins over the past couple of years. The Nike Method Core Drone Belly Putter is built on that success and features much of the innovative technology built into other Method range putters including Poly-metal groove technology and poly-metal insert technology. These combine to create a smooth and consistent roll.
The Nike Method has a shape all of its own with two wings behind the head which help create a very high MOI and all round balance within the putter. The Nike Method Core Drone also features a single, straight line alignment aid and is fitted with a heel placed double bend belly putter shaft.
Wilson Staff Vizor Belly Putter
The Wilson Staff Vizor Putter has a simple but brilliant piece of design technology that allows a player to lock their eyes into the same place above the putter every time they putt. This greatly improves consistency of strokes, roll and distance control. This is achieved via a slot that is cut into the top of the head and a line below on the top side of the sole that are designed to be lined up together to guarantee a consistent head and eye position over the ball.
The head is mallet in shape and is made from light weight aluminium body and is framed by a steel outer shell. This creates both a soft feel off the face and a high MOI adding to the stability of the putter.
To increase feel of the face the Wilson Vizor is fitted with a Urethane face insert.
Scotty Cameron Kombi Mid
Scotty Cameron Putters have been a world leader in top class putter design and manufacture for the last decade. With the increase in popularity of Belly Putters, Cameron has produced the Kombi Mid Belly Putter.
The kombi Mid is made from milled aluminium and features a three-point-weighted system.
Two weights are set into the sole, one on the toe side and one on the heel side. There is a further heavy centre weight bar set in the length of the sole. This creates a perfect balance for the 43” belly putter.
There is red T-bar alignment aid in the head. A split grip from Winn completes a classy offering from Scotty Cameron.
Rife Belly Putter Range - Custom Fit
Rife recently announced it's range of belly putters featuring the Barbados, Deep Blue & Two Bar Hybrid Mallet putters along with availability to get a full custom fit.
