Press from Titleist

At the season’s first World Golf Championship it was the Titleist golf ball that prevailed as each of the top four finishers put their trust in the #1 ball in golf.

After five days of intense competition at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, held at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Arizona, it was Hunter Mahan (Pro V1x) that emerged victorious defeating Titleist Brand Ambassador and World #2 Rory McIlroy (Pro V1x) 2 &1 in the championship match. Elsewhere, there were further wins for Titleist golf ball loyalists at the PGA Tour's Mayakoba Classic, the LPGA Tour’s HSBC Women's Champions and the Telcom PGA Championship on the South African Tour. These wins continue a fast start to the 2012 season for Titleist with the iconic Pro V1 franchise having so far claimed 23 titles compared to three for the nearest competitor.

Titleist Pro V1x loyalist Hunter Mahan claimed the second World Golf Championship event of his career at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and moved inside the top ten on the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time. The 29 year old Texan produced a fine display en route to the final and carried this form into the championship match against Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy. Mahan broke the deadlock with a birdie two at the short par-3 sixth and never relinquished his lead as he went on to secure victory. In the consolation match, Pro V1x loyalists Mark Wilson and Lee Westwood locked horns, with Wilson the eventual winner by a 1up margin.

In addition to all four Sunday participants relying on the Pro V1x golf ball for their success, runner-up Rory McIlroy also trusted Titleist throughout the bag, including the 910D2 driver, 906F2 fairway metals, MB (712) irons, Vokey Design SM4 pitching, sand, and lob wedges and Scotty Cameron Newport prototype putter. In addition to being the choice of the champion, the feel and control of the legendary Pro V1 franchise was also the overwhelming choice of the field, with 38 players teeing-up a Titleist golf ball compared to nine for the nearest competitor.

On the PGA Tour, the winner of the Mayakoba Classic relied upon the Pro V1 golf ball for his success. The 21-year old parred the eighth hole of a sudden death playoff for his first PGA Tour victory in just his fifth career start. In fact, the champion parred all eight holes in a playoff that matched the second-longest in PGA Tour history. The Pro V1 loyalist closed with an eight-under par 65 en route to a 13-under par, 271 total to claim a playoff spot before holding his nerve to win with a par three at the short tenth. Titleist golf balls were also the choice of the field at the Mayakoba Classic, with 87 players choosing the #1 ball in golf, compared to 14 for the nearest competitor.

Elsewhere, on the LPGA Tour, Pro V1 loyalist Angela Stanford emerged from a four-way, all-Titleist golf ball playoff to capture the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore. Stanford sank a three-foot par putt on the third playoff hole to top Jenny Shin (Pro V1) after Shanshan Feng (Pro V1x) and Na Yeon Choi (Pro V1x) had previously been eliminated. On the South African Tour, Titleist golf ball loyalist Keith Horne (Pro V1x) captured the fifth Sunshine Tour event of his career at the Telcom PGA Championship following a three-under par final round of 69. Fellow Titleist golf ball loyalists Alex Haindl (Pro V1x) and Darren Fichardt (Pro V1x) were among three players who tied for second place.

A second career World Golf Championship victory for Titleist golf ball loyalist Hunter Mahan ahead of an all-Titleist golf ball final four, coupled with further wins around the world for Titleist golf ball loyalists, continues to prove that the world’s best players opt for the performance excellence of Titleist for their success.
