What Could Rory McIlroy Achieve Next

By: | Thu 24 Apr 2025

When Rory McIlroy won the 2025 Masters, his childhood dream became reality. McIlroy winning the Masters made him just the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam - a rare achievement to say the very least.

After a wait that lasted over a decade, McIlroy's major title drought is over - and what a way to end it, might I add. It was an electric race to the finish between the Northern Irishman and Justin Rose requiring a playoff to determine the destiny of the Green Jacket after McIlroy's missed putt on the 18th.

McIlroy made no mistake this time round, however, with a laser approach shot and a calm putt to see it off. The Green Jacket was his, finally, and the long-awaited Grand Slam was complete.

But what comes next? How do you follow up arguably the biggest and most prestigious achievement in the whole of golf? Having cemented himself in the history of the sport, let's look at what could come next for this modern legend of the game.

More Major Titles

McIlroy now sits on five major titles, having won the PGA Championship twice already, but how high could he climb up the overall majors won league table? Jack Nicklaus sits steady at the top of the leaderboard, with an astounding 18 majors. Tiger Woods comes in second with 15 major titles and Walter Hagen just off them with 11 victories. Harry Vardon currently holds the record of most majors won by a European, with seven major titles. Nick Faldo won six, while Seve Ballesteros, and now McIlroy, sit in third with five majors won, but could the new Masters champion become the leader of Europe in terms of majors won?

This year, the Open is returning to Northern Ireland, being played at Royal Portrush. McIlroy famously broke the course record here back in 2005 as a youngster, when he shot a striking 61. This history and the added home soil boost will surely set him up with the greatest odds of the field at this year's Open Championship.

Everyone also remembers McIlroy's unlived dream at the 150th Open back in 2022. To win at St Andrews is a dream for all golfers, and with the Open returning to the Old Course in 2027, this could be the perfect opportunity for McIlroy to tick another one off the list.

The US Open is also sure to be on McIlroy's radar this June having finished runner-up two years in a row in America's national championship. We all recall the tragic tale of McIlroy's final round at Pinehurst last year, where putting errors gave Bryson DeChambeau his second US Open title. Will this be the year that McIlroy finishes the job and claims the US Open title for the second time?

Record Ryder Cup Points Scorer

The Ryder Cup truly is one of the most exciting events in golf. McIlroy made his Ryder Cup debut way back in 2010, and he is sure-fire to be in the team this year with his electric form. For decades, Team Europe has been led by legends of the game, and McIlroy is next in line for this title.

Sergio Garcia currently holds the record for most points scored for Europe, sitting on a staggering 28.5 points. Garcia recently declared his ambition to get back into the Ryder Cup team, and his performances in major competitions will be pivotal towards this.

McIlroy sits further behind on 18 points. So, with that, is it possible for him to become the top European points scorer? Ultimately, yes. McIlroy has been one of the best and most consistent golfers in the world for well over a decade now, and he is showing no signs of slowing down - if anything he is heating up!

Rory McIlroy is at his best when he is fired up, when we see the classic ‘Rory roar’ - and we witness this the most during Ryder Cup matches. From singles matches, McIlroy has won four of his seven matches, losing two and halving one. He also has a combined 12 wins from fourball and foursomes' competitions.

A handful of spots still rest in the balance for Team Europe this year, but McIlroy has all but confirmed himself as an automatic selection.

Only time will tell if McIlroy will be able to keep a hold of his form and his position in the Ryder Cup team throughout the next decade, but looking at his current game, we can presume he will for the foreseeable future.
